The Lune Seaport, on this day of the Hunter's Moon in the third Cerulean Era, was attacked by the Genius Praesepe in its first expedition. Its aftermath caused the disappearance of fourty-four Lune citizens on the first day, followed by about a hundred within the following week. Where the first attack appeared random, the subsequent strikes targeted prominent figures in the city until the bustling city fell to its knees. It was to be known as the prologue to the Banquet of Revolution, a horrible event that somehow only received a footnote in history. But that is a story for another time. Let us return to the incident and tell the tale of a young mistress who would grasp the power of destiny. Laelia was simply a Yellow District member in the wrong district at the wrong time. She had spent the morning browsing through the Green District farmers' market in order to buy some groceries for the week. She was to pass through the Blue District on her way home to the Yellow District. As the golden-haired girl walked by the Fountain of Fate, a bag of produce in one hand and her trusty parasol in the other, she felt an overwhelming presence creep itself into her mind. Witness... A distorted voice boomed within her subconscious. Shutting her eyes for a brief moment, she continued onward. Her eyes glanced to the side and spotted a small crowd watching a street magician. It was probably one of his tricks, as she had been aware of some abilities that could project one's Telepathy upon complete strangers. Some of the performers in the Yellow District would often use a similar technique to amplify their voice by manipulating the acoustics. Question... The voice was only getting louder and she made an irritated glare at the performer's direction. Conquest. Immediately she felt a sharp headache and nearly lost her balance from the sudden pain. Some fruits fell loose from her bag and she bent down to pick them up. Laelia was only this close from turning back and giving the performer a piece of her mind... except that she noticed that everyone else was reacting the same way. Magician included. But before she was able to find out what was going on, the unpleasant feeling came back in full reverberation. A loud noise that can only be described as thousands of small screeches put together started to come from the fountain's direction as a black void started to open up. What came out was a swarm of shadowy insects that flew in a dense spherical formation. Merely looking at the floating ball, which seemed to glow a sinister red color in its core, seemed to amplify her headache. Some of the crowd picked themselves up and stumbled away as quickly as possible. Knights of the Blue District raised their weapons in defense, ready to engage the monster in battle. Laelia placed the bag of groceries down and gripped her parasol tightly. The faint glow of mana revealed its properties as a magical weapon, except that she had no intention of engaging the swarm in battle. She was only a Bard after all, a songweaver whose magic potential mostly revolved around improving others' morale. It didn't take any time for the swarm to start attacking, as the collective herd started to fly in the direction of one of the knights. Understandably, the knight was unsure about how he was to combat such a monster and simply raised his shield in hopes of mitigating the assault. The swarm split into two upon collision with the metal buckler, each half flying around the object and then attacking the man. He dropped the shield in an instant, letting out a loud scream in pain as the cloud obscured his face. Everyone was frozen in fear until a bright red flash made its way to the engulfed knight. Someone had used Orb of Lava to attack the monster, freeing its grip upon the guard. The assaulted man slumped to the ground with a pained expression. His face was bleeding all over as though he were poked with hundreds of needles. The Sorcerer who had landed the attack, a magic student presumably of the Orange District's Coral College, had attracted the attention of the swarm. He immediately disengaged and ran as far away as possible, all the while sending Mana Arrow attacks toward the monster's way. With each hit, the individual points where the mob was hit seemed to be visibly damaged one second and fully regenerated the next. It was impossible to gauge how powerful the mob seemed to be by its erratic movements preventing one from concentrating and pulling up its data. The student continued to run around and was making a fair amount of progress until he tripped on a loose stone on the floor and collapsed onto the street. Integrate... The black swarm descended upon muffled screams until the sound stopped and the student was no more. It did not seem to have eaten the mage as the size of the swarm was still a relatively small ball, far smaller than the physique of its victim. Yet the student was gone completely. At this sight, many others started to panic and immediately ran away. Others stood their ground, either through sheer desperation or fear. Never mind the groceries. She dropped the bag and got to her feet, her now-free palm wiping away the cold sweat from her forehead. She folded up the parasol and ran down a side alley, hoping to get as far away from the scene as possible. She knew that the Azure Palace was just beyond the Fountain to the north, but she wasn't going to report the incident to the authorities. There were plenty of others who had ran away earlier, certainly someone else had already called for backup. She just needed to get away. In the spur of the moment, as the girl was running one moment, she found herself colliding into something invisible and falling prone on the ground the next moment. "A... a barrier?" Laelia pointed her hand forward to touch the invisible boundary again. And just as she did, her hand was made with solid resistance. It was an invisible wall that glowed with the presence of mana as she touched it. The girl picked herself up and attempted to find any way out of the barrier, but several seconds of searching confirmed that the wall spanned the entire alley. She had two options, to either return to the clearing and hope that it was being dealt with or to stay here and wait for the barrier to lift. If it would at all. Laelia would need to return in order to head down a different passage and staying here would prove no point. She hesitantly spun around and made her way back to the clearing. Her hope that someone had handled the situation was dashed when she witnessed the apparition floating above a pile of bodies. There were only a few people remaining who seemed to be alive, and they were all fallen on the ground in despair, muttering words to themselves. Laelia's attempt to sneak away from the incident was unsuccessful as her presence caused the cloud to start moving again. But so long as she was able to elude the creatures, it should have been okay. Unfortunately, as these thoughts went into her mind, she spotted another semi-transparent barrier. Was there no way out? Laelia tried to strike the invisible wall with her umbrella, but it didn't budge. She had no choice. She needed to fight. And this time, it was headed for her.
