It was all over. The light had faded from her eyes. Reflect... Laelia had fallen to her knees, all her strength immediately lost. As the darkness surrounded her, she accepted her fate, that everything was simply about to end in a few more moments. She could only think whether her demise would be very painful or not. Cry... Those people on the ground, she wasn't sure if they were still alive or not. Alive, only to slowly suffer the pain of a thousand needles until your life ebbed away... It wasn't as though she could have done anything to help them. Laelia was never one of those children who aspired to achieve anything big with her magical gift. Whereas many others aspired to travel to the Kingdom of the North to defend the nation from the threat of creeping darkness, the Kingdom Beyond the Sea to hone their skills, or to the Kingdom of the South and attain great journeys and adventures. She supposed that this was such a fitting end for someone who grew up, forgetting to dream. Perish... She shook her head a few times slowly, lamenting over the fact that this was about to be her end. Whispering final apologies to her family, she closed her eyes. Only at this time did tears start to well up in her eyes and she felt all the more scared for realizing it. The blue-eyed girl awaited the sting that would signal the end, but it was not to come. Was this entity wicked enough as to prolong her suffering until she lamented enough? She spent a few seconds trying not to look up at the predator but eventually she couldn't help but direct her eyes toward the swarm. Time itself had stopped. The entire swarm had stopped moving altogether and the buzzing went away completely due to the total atrophy of movement. She didn't even have any time to think about what it might have meant before the transparent wall behind her was suddenly bathed in radiant light. Two individuals had walked forward out of thin air. One of them was dressed in an eccentrically unusual garb. A cloak with a hood and a face that was obscured by glowing red eyes underneath pumpkin-shaped headgear. The solemn frown of the person underneath was in juxtaposition to the jack-o-lantern's wide smile. The other person was a girl who seemed to be dressed in attire slightly similar to the Coral College's uniform. She was a raven-haired girl with a dark coat draped over the garb. "I hope you realize that having to watch the equivalent of a horror movie through someone else's eyes makes me want to rewrite the plot, badly." "Hehehe! I have no doubts that you're just itching to do it. I know I wanted to for the longest time. But look, here's the heroine!" The sunken eyes of the blonde-haired girl flashed back to life now that she was met with these two voices who seemed determined to stop this incident from happening. "Who... Who are you?" Laelia's disbelief at the scene before her was enough for her to snap out of her prior mindset and regain her composure, at least for the moment. "I'm the exterminator. Laelia wasn't even sure if it was even a stone, as the object changed from a dull blue to a shining turquoise color in an instant. The light was bright enough to blind her for a few moments, causing her to shut her eyes in reflex. After the world reappeared again, Laelia realized that she was back where she was a few minutes prior. Her sudden change in posture combined with the extra weight in her arms almost caused her to drop the bag of groceries by reflex. Laelia looked on, extremely puzzled by the situation. It was that that moment that she spotted the two individuals who had appeared to her a moment prior. She certainly didn't daydream the entire circumstance. It had actually happened, which meant only one thing. It was going to happen once again. Laelia placed the bag onto the ground and quickly made her way toward the two who seemed to be discussing some plans on how they should have handled the fight. "Considering I just stopped time just then, wouldn't it make a lot of sense to stop time again and kill the thing without any resistance?" "It doesn't work like that. It's, how do you Adventurers call it... a required boss battle." The dark-haired girl simply shrugged and crossed her arms. "Fine. In any case, Trickster, get these people out of here. I certainly don't want to have anyone notice the type of magic I'm using if I can help it. I'm not quite sure how wary people are about Heretics in this timeline, but if Avon is any indication, it's probably not very well-received." The pumpkin-headed character nodded. It was at that moment that the two noticed her stare. "I thought everyone was supposed to have lost their memory? No matter. Get everyone else away." The individual in the robe seemed to walk into the crowd to play a familiar melody, which caused the people around them to suddenly obey their will. The individuals at the fountain calmly walked away in a scripted formation under the spell. It was a modified tune of the Hamelin Ensemble, she realized. Nevertheless, after the crowd had walked away, the dark-haired girl focused her attention directly onto the Lune citizen. "Okay. I want you to listen carefully. In a few moments, that swarm of bees is going to arrive once again. I need your help to fight it off and I want you to trust me that it'll all be fine." The girl's dialect sounded a little different than Laelia was normally accustomed to. Part of the matter was because the girl in front of her actually happened to come from a timeline that was many years far into the future, so there were a few minor language differences that she could have discerned. Nevertheless, she understood the statement well enough. "I don't think I'm strong enough to be of any help, though..." At that moment, the other girl placed the dimly colored stone into her free palm, causing it to glow brightly once again. All of a sudden, her mind was filled with a huge amount of information that all flashed into her mind in a single instance. Where she only had knowledge of a few of the song magic spells she had been taught, Laelia was now aware of several more songs that sounded as vivid in her mind as though she had practiced those songs for years. She simply felt stronger overall, as though the stone in her hand had turned on some kind of switch in her subconsciousness. This overflow of information felt slightly overwhelming but otherwise a pleasant experience compared to the scratched-up voice that echoed in the back of her mind during the outbreak. However, she might have spoken too soon. The voices were beginning to start again and at that moment, the other girl seemed to pull out a sword in response. "It's coming. She wasn't sure what she had to do, in the first place. First of all, her level and the quality of all her items had shot up to 90. Considering her nature as a Bard, she probably needed to try and understand the new skill knowledge that was currently going through her mind. There was something in her head telling her about a musical theory called the Battle Tempo, and then something else talking about new tier combinations, and even a voice mentioning how Siren Solo has dramatically changed since the era that the voice remembered it existing in... These voices seemed to be coming from the rock in her hands. Laelia figured that she would just go with the flow whenever something came up that she didn't quite know about. All these voices in her mind were basically telling her to get ready for combat anyway. The blonde-haired girl replaced the magical parasol with her trusty cello. "I figure if all my weapons are going to be at Level 90, then..." the girl fiddled with the interface a bit more. "Allul Zero!" The floor lit up for a brief second as the magician generated forth a control bar in her left hand, its strings connecting to a small puppet that had just materialized. She didn't need the glowing stone's knowledge to understand that her partner's subclass was Puppeteer. She had seen a number of Puppeteers in performances throughout the Yellow District before, except that the majority of them used the wooden doll simply as a form of entertainment. The small child-sized mannequin right before her, however, was wielding a similar-looking sword as its controller, designating its status as a puppet used for combat purposes. Laelia really had a lot of questions she wanted to ask this girl when it was all done. She knew nothing about this individual or their background, yet she was fighting beside her in combat against an equally mysterious foe. The dark-haired girl simply seemed to project an aura that was far different from the other citizens, to say nothing about the power of the mysterious stone. "And here it is." The black portal opened up again, and the horrible sound of tiny screeching made its way into her mind. What's more, the whispering words that crept into her consciousness were louder this time, as though the swarm's voice was speaking directly into her ear. The other magician didn't even give the bees any chance to set up as she prepared to enter into combat. In reaction, Laelia began to play all the necessary songs to assist her partner. "S-speed Sword Etude. Aggression Orchestra. Reverb-" The first melody was Speed Sword Etude, a skill that boosted attack speed. It was followed by Aggression Orchestra, which increased damage potency for allies and weakened enemies within range. She didn't even manage to get a third song prepared before the girl and her puppet shot forward at the mob. The first to hit was the puppet whose body landed into the air with a single somersault before smashing its body into the black cloud. The sword embedded in its figure glowed for a brief second before causing an explosion from within, decimating any of the bees that were floating near that area. The monster's HP dropped heavily from that single attack, a phenomenon that could have been seen visually as well. Where there had been a floating sphere, the explosion practically smashed the shape in a way that a quarter of it had disappeared before the swarm could regroup. And that wasn't even the attack from the girl either. "If you're weak to AoE damage, then try this!" Jumping after the puppet, the girl lept into the air and pointed the tip of her sword toward the air. Then, as she swung it downward, a black essence materialized from its tip until the substance took shape and assumed the form of a sweeping wave of darkness that completely engulfed the foe. The Miasma Curtain went straight through the monster and caused it to shutter for a brief moment before the creature shattered into small blue particles. "Easy." It was at that moment that time seemed to stop again for a moment. The area surrounding them suddenly darkened and colored a foreboding red, as though they were entering a creature's magical domain. Out of the black portal came even more hornets that fluttered about in an even denser sphere. The monster's very interior was colored in the same crimson that lingered around in the area. "Or well, I take that back. Hopefully you don't die in a 1-2-3 button combo either." The new sphere of hornets wasn't as densely compacted, but it certainly looked a lot more imposing. The glowing red portion flashed as though they were eyes, watching the two individuals and awaiting their next move. Her eyes momentarily scanned the area to see that the crowd and the pumpkin-headed person was gone. It was good that there weren't any other people who possibly might be caught up in this battle. Laelia took a moment to scan the new monster's statistics over once again. It was a Level 90 field boss. Where the girl had no knowledge of field bosses other than "if you encounter one when you're walking outside the city, run away as fast as you can," the level was a big factor as well. She'd never seen monsters higher than 20 or 30, much less 90. It was very fortunate that her own level and her companion's level were 90 at the moment. There would have been no way she'd have agreed to helping out in the fight if her level was still 15. Her heartbeat was rapid. With this monster came a surge of unpleasant emotions. She wasn't sure how much of it was due to the monster's origins as a swarm of bees. Certainly bees and insects for that matter were creatures that aroused a strong sense of fear in most people. Maybe not to the point of causing phobias for most people, but many would instinctively react to such things negatively. Laelia hasn't been afraid of bees before, yet maybe she was starting to reconsider. In any case, she felt as though there was more to the creature than a scary appearance. Maybe it had the ability to control or project emotions. As the beehive pulled itself out of the portal, the other girl disengaged from her close-range position and commanded the puppet to follow suit. "Trickster, tell me what you know about this thing." the dark-haired girl spoke as though talking to the other person via Telepathy. Yet, she wasn't making the hand gesture at all. Did the Trickster have an amazing sense of hearing? And if so, how could they respond? "All right, so!" Laelia was startled by a pumpkin-looking creature that materialized out of nowhere. It looked like a familiar spirit, a floating jack-o-lantern where the eyes and mouth flashed every time the other individual said anything. "You're looking at the Genius of Pestilence, Praesepe! Called the Beehive Cluster, it is located in the constellation Cancer and is 577 light- oh wait, useless information. Think of bees. They're hard to hit with swords. They sting and hurt you with venom. They fly around. They burn when you nope out and burn them with fire~! They're somewhat resistant to darkness attacks this time, I wonder why?" In reaction to this bit of information, the other girl frowned. "Two forms! It'll clump up together and try to literally punch you or it'll spread out to keep you from punching it! And... there's a couple more things that seem cool but I'll let you find out for yourself. Although Laelia still didn't know what was going on and why they were having to fight this monster, the answers would hopefully come after they had defeated the cloud. The support class was now the one actually performing the frontline maneuvers now that the other girl had fallen back. She wasn't sure what her partner was currently doing, as multiple occult-looking circles appeared underneath her body every few seconds. It seemed as though her partner was a user of the dark arts magic, an otherwise unconventional ability that was taught in the Orange District. It went something to the point of utilizing negative emotions as energy to be harnessed for spellcasting, rather than simple reliance on mana. That being the case, it was often a misused ability as many who would try such a thing ended up corrupting themselves with the power. She hoped that her partner was knowledgeable enough with her abilities in order to keep herself from being affected too much by the effects. From each overlapping magic circle, she felt that the other girl was getting stronger, yet she also felt the increasing intensity of the voices that came through the pebble's blessing. The voices that were previously talking all calmly were now up at arms, calling for the destruction of their enemy. In any case, it was time for the Bard to cover for her teammate as she prepared her spell. Laelia was now being put on the spot, having to see what her skills were in practice. The use of Speed Sword Etude and Aggression Orchestra from a few seconds prior did not change the way she used her skills just yet. The blonde-haired girl was aware of the Battle Tempo mechanic, a system where if she were to use song magic that was compatible with each other, the Battle Tempo would then attenuate into a higher or lower overall tone. She was aware that most offensive Bard skills tended to raise the overall tempo, and although they did buff the two fighters in battle, the two skills mentioned did not carry on a tempo. In that case, she would need to start out with raising it as far as possible. Laelia checked the description for the Sonic Hammer skill for a moment. If she read this right, then it was best to start out with weaker skills to amplify its power. "Sonic Cutter!" By placing the bow to the cello and playing a note, a cutting wave projectile was shot forward toward the dark cloud. The ripping wind made a visible cut onto the target, bisecting it for a brief moment before the bee swarm accumulated together again. She had used this skill earlier to no avail, but this time, its visual effects were definitely more pronounced in terms of damage and HP loss to the monster. The sound of the harmonics around her had changed to a faster pace; it would appear that this was the Allegro stage that many of her song magic skills described. "Double Sonic Cutter!" Laelia used the skill two more times in rapid succession, cutting an X-shaped mark in the monster. Now, the sound of the harmonics was incredibly fast-paced, playing in her mind as though feverishly setting the fight close to the climax. It was the right time to use her new skill. "Sonic Hammer!" The moment she touched the bow to the cello again, the musical instrument flashed and immediately shot out a dense wall of air forward. The caster had to stumble backward about a few steps in order to compensate for the recoil. In any case, this destructive burst of wind smashed into the body of the beehive, crushing the insects that flew at the front of the formation. Considering that the entire cluster was caught in the attack, the Sonic Hammer skill quite literally ripped away the outer shell of the floating mass and revealed the red core underneath. The HP of the Praesepe Hive dropped by a sizable chunk with that last attack. "That's very impressive. You were mentioning water spells?" the magician commented. Laelia imagined the spell in question and began to play its tune. Considering that they were right next to a water fountain and only a short distance away from the ocean, the skill of this next ability would have been amplified by a fair amount. The strumming of the cello caused a stream of water to circle around the bee swarm as though entangling the entity in its grip. Then, as the water started to evaporate, it became a thick layer of steam that exploded into the monster. This was the basis of the Aqua Concert skill, but now she had to check the effects of the Geyser Chorus ability. The water was being manipulated once again as it changed to a concentrated steam that blasted away even more hornets from the nest. They were making a fair amount of progress by simply attacking the monster during this preemptive strike, but now it wasn't going to be quite as easy. "Vengeance." The angered voices of the being before them called out for revenge. "Suffering." As the hornet formation regrouped back into its original configuration, the entity was starting to spread out its forces much like earlier. However, instead of forming a thin cloud, it was thickening and changing shape. The cloud now resembled a hand and it was about to launch its counterattack. The other girl's appearance was beginning to look slightly warped at first. Her black hair was turning a silver color and veins were starting to protrude from the side of her temples. It was only after she casted another spell that covered up the extent of how much the dark magic had affected her. Nevertheless, she would not be able to attack immediately. The bee swarm was beginning to launch its brutal assault. In order to prepare for this, the black magician sent forth... her tiny puppet? Laelia was slightly doubtful that something that small could have been able to protect them well enough. As the bee swarm became a hand-shaped enemy, its density had bulked up to the point where she could not have seen any gap in its formation. It was a floating hand of roughly a meter long and it launched the first attack toward the Bard's direction. She braced for the impact, but the small mannequin had jumped in the way of the attack, stopping it about a few meters short of reaching Laelia. Nevertheless, the wooden doll did manage to fulfill its purpose and she was thankful for that. After having its first attack blocked by the small object, the hand changed its target and moved on to focus on the puppet. It slapped the mannequin backward and followed up by grabbing its frame within its palm, supposedly in order to crush the object with its strength. A burning trail of fire was shot out from the direction of the other magician, making its way toward the hand and enveloping the entity in black flames. The spell used just now certainly had been a conjuration made from dark magic, but it seemed to also possess a fire element that burned away at the hand. Some of the hornets that made up the hive were caught on fire and burned away from the rest of the formation. The hand seemed to twitch from having been caught on fire, its individual units scattering off from the main fleet in order to prevent the entirety from taking any further damage. Regardless, together the two defenders were able to whittle down the enemy's HP without sustaining very much damage to themselves. Perhaps Laelia's only concern was that the small puppet was beginning to show visible signs of damage, which meant that it couldn't take very much more damage for long. The schoolgirl also seemed to notice such as well, considering that she was no longer using the mannequin to tank hits directly; merely to lead the entity to a position where she or Laelia could launch attacks at it in its blind spot. At a certain point, the swarm returned to its original configuration and were beginning to launch more coordinated attacks. One such mechanic was the fleet pinpointing a certain spot on the target and bombarding the area with hundreds of needles over a few seconds. The puppet had fallen victim to this attack and the technique caused its chest to crack as a result. There was a flash of blue light as the black magician returned the object to her inventory and began to cast another ability. This next technique caused armor to materialize around herself, as though she had changed from a magician into a knight clad in dark armor. Running to intercept the swarm, she continued to shoot forth beams of magic from the tip of her blade, a similarly-designed magic weapon like Laelia's umbrella. Laelia in the meantime had been providing some backup by tossing out cutting wave attacks using a combination of Sonic Cutter and Sonic Hammer. It was difficult to adjust to the new fighting style and so she'd have to occasionally switch the Battle Tempo down to a slower rhythm in order to recover her mana. She often used such a time to cast whatever healing spells were in her spell list onto her partner. At the rate they were going and the radiance of the magic stone in her possession, it seemed as though the fight was heavily influenced in their favor. Nevertheless, a little bit of healing went a long way in order to ensure their greatest chances at victory. Before long, the monster's HP dropped to about 25% and it was beginning to behave oddly. The voices it was whispering increased in intensity as though the hornet swarm itself was going crazy. The red mist that surrounded the battlefield was beginning to accumulate onto the ground, its glow extending to form a gigantic circle on the floor with the swarm at its center. "Run out." At her command, Laelia dashed out of the circle's domain with the armored girl in tow and right as they both jumped out of the circle, the hornet swarm changed configuration to reveal its blood-red core underneath. The sky darkened alarmingly and the red aura lit up, creating a localized explosion within the circle. The return of Praesepe's normal form indicated that the dangerous phase was over and that its regular attack cycle was to return. But at this, the dark-haired girl simply stood in defiance. With a snap of her finger, something happened. There was a flash upon the hive's body as parts of it were beginning to sunder for some reason. The attack had knocked the monster's HP well into the 10% region. The monster was desperate. It needed to take down the two enemies in its way, and yet it was unable to do such. And so in response, it was beginning to pull up an entirely new portal, rending the space in front of it again in order to potentially call for reinforcements. They needed to end this, now. The force of this presence made it slightly harder to breathe, as though there was a gradually-increasing weight on her chest. Regardless, now that the swarm was reaching a critical point in HP, it was starting to behave more defensively. Rather than continue on with its attack, it was changing shape. The beehive moved so that it seemed to project a thicker outside shell that was gathered up in pieces. She understood what it was trying to do. Basically, the Praesepe had exposed its bright red core, which it was using to constantly cut open tears to call reinforcements and regenerate itself. Meanwhile, the rest of the beehive cloud floated far enough away that the core wouldn't be hit by any area of effect skills. It was notable that the swarm only seemed to cover its peripherals, as though it were a large ring revolving around a sphere. If only they would have been able to penetrate through the barrier and attack the core directly, it would all be over. Thinking about this, Laelia wondered what to do. She set her eyes toward the mob and then toward the other magician. "It would be slightly risky to bypass the rest and go for the core, but I have an idea. We'll only have one chance and you'll have to be ready to attack immediately." "I think I can do it." Laelia checked her current status. It was currently in Allegro and two more Allegro skills would put her into Presto. She would need to optimally use those two spells in order to break through the fleet. The blonde-haired girl nodded. "What is your plan?" Her question was met only with a light smile and an expression that seemed something like "look and find out." Immediately, two glowing black wings sprouted from the magician's back. Laelia stared on with both awe and a slight sense of caution. "Don't worry, I have control over my abilities." the other girl consoled her after seeing the slight change in expression. "We're going to fly over the wall at the last second and attack from there. So let's go, I'll be right behind you." With this, the two girls began to run right into the wall of bees. Some of the insects attempted to attack individually, many of which stung independently and caused their HP to both be lowered slightly. But after a few meters, they were right up against the main force, a buzzing black wall that seemed ready to block their movements as much as possible. At this moment, she felt the other girl's hands grab onto her waist tightly as the two ascended into the air. The sudden change in elevation was something she needed to adjust to at first, because she almost dropped her cello right then. Nevertheless, they had vaulted over the main wall and were closing in on a gap that would lead them to the core in the center. Some of the bees attempted to intercept; Laelia activated the Funeral March Organ skill and shot forth a single Sonic Cutter, slashing right into the sentinels. Finally, as they entered the clearing, the magician dropped her onto the ground and landed herself. Another cloud was beginning to materialize and Laelia shot a second Sonic Cutter at the swarm. At this very moment, the secondary effect of Funeral March Organ was beginning to activate. Any other bees that were trying to stop the two were blown away by a mysterious force. For the moment, there was nothing between them and the glowing red core that floated only a few meters away. "Let's go." Halt... As the black magician ran to the side to flank the core, Laelia prepared her Sonic Hammer skill. The remnants of water and steam energy that was still around her caused the wall of air to become saturated with vapor as it shot forward into the red sphere. Cease... The impact with the orb smashed parts of it into pieces but otherwise one more attack was needed to finish it off. And that was where her partner came in. The girl made a leap, magical sword in hand, and crashed down onto the core with a single downward vertical slash. The red sphere was now bisected and the entire hornet fleet started to shutter. Defeated...? After another second, they all wasted away, taking the malicious aura around them with them. The tears were beginning to close as well, returning the two back to the Blue District. As the land returned to a clear sunny day beside the sea, Laelia collapsed to her knees in exhaustion. She only observed the girl who was beginning to communicate with the talking pumpkin again. "Well, I'd say you two did quite well! Not bad for only two people without a healer! But now I must have you know this... Lune is not yet saved. You may have delayed its destruction, but it is still going to happen by another event. For the time being, we need to retreat back and decide how we're supposed to continue from this point on."
