Crafting Recipe Proposed:
The item proposed is what's commonly called "a stick".But not just ANY stick, nay, a stick from the planet Malchior 7, where the trees are 300' tall and breathe fire!!! I strongly considered just going with the "base recipe" for a generic martial arts weapon, however I couldn't figure out how to write it as anything other than a laminate staff (it requires glue and a plank, so you'd have to essentially start with a 1x1 which is crap, round it to a dowel then use it as the core in a bamboo staff basically). This was way more complicated than what my character would have thought to attempt to begin with, and IRL laminates are worse than a good carved sapling; they were only developed because Korea had shit for tree selection--I digress.
Explanation:
The researched process for creating a stick essentially boils down to materials and time. Specifically, the problem is that 99.99% of the trees in the forest are not good candidates for this process. In order to begin you must have a green sapling of an evergreen tree between 2' and 3' taller than the length of the intended staff, with no junctions or deformities, it's got to just be naturally straight. After finding and sawing down the sapling, you use either the saw or a carving knife (depending on thickness) to strip all of the limbs off, you then "top the tree" after carefully measuring out how long you want the staff to be (be sure to leave an extra ~1" for sanding). The staff is measured and the center point marked and all of the bark is removed from the top (tapered in) section of the staff.
Using coarse sandpaper all of the nubs from branches, knots etc are sanded smooth, and the top is rounded off. Once you've got the top half done (you might want to do some detail work with some finer grit but nothing fancy yet, there's WAY more sanding to do later), you repeat the process for the lower half of the staff, which sounds the same, except it's like 10x the work! Because it doesn't naturally taper in like the top did, it tapers out, and you have to first remove the outward taper, then add in the inward taper. All with sandpaper... Yay.
It's now time for balancing. If you've done everything correctly there should be a thin band of bark remaining on what should be the center-point of the staff... except trees aren't perfect (and neither is the sanding job you did) so it won't quite be--it's time to take MORE sandpaper and sand down the heavy side uniformly until the balance is right.
Once everything is finally a staff it's all finishing work just moving on to finer and finer grits of sandpaper til the thing finally feels like it's made of wax.
I don't really know what else there is to say about it. I think most boys at some point in their life have carved a stick, I know I used to do it all the time, perhaps my character had as well?
All told, in order to create this style of staff (Martial arts, blunt, bo) you would need a 1 in a million straight, dense, connifer, 2'-3' taller than the intended weapon, a hand saw, a carving knife, and probably 20 pieces of sandpaper of various grits.
EDIT: If you want to get super fancy then you'd also need a very small chisel, a jeweler's hammer, an accurate way to measure within 1/10" and some way to mark out pattern prior to chiseling so you could create a textured surface that would prevent slippage. My character hasn't gone for this yet but intends to try this in the future if he ever finds "the perfect tree".
