Disheartened by the loss of the staff that he had spent nearly five days on, tehm was not in good spirits.

(The beer's all water, the food all soggy, everything I touch turns to rubbish, and I haven't had a smoke in days...)

He was sure that the process he had followed was correct, the staff was turning out beautifully until some hidden game system decided to poll his crafting level and turn his completed work into garbage. This implied the main thing he was lacking was simply crafting experience...

Tehm smiled as he realized what he should do.

Walking through the crafting stalls, tehm returned again to the woodworking shop where he had purchased his initial supply of materials.

"Your finest block of Maple please, and a couple of hand drills if you have them.", the merchant deftly showed him a number of options and tehm selected a small ~3/16" and a larger ~1/2" drill.

"Say, You wouldn't have any wood glue would you?"

Tehm had no idea if he could accomplish something like this in this new world; although there were several accesseries modeled after real life pipes, none were as crude as the type which he was going to attempt to make. Without access to a lathe or a means of constructing a bit, the style of pipe which he was going to have to attempt was much closer to that of a 'cob than a classic briar, but it would have to do. He didn't know what else to try.

After obtaining the supplies, tehm returned to 'his' spot, a grassy corner formed by the junction of two thick stone walls protecting this part of town. It was seldom visited by either the adventurers or the people of the land and he thought, perhaps, it was his favorite spot in all of 'London'.

Pulling the smaller hand-drill out of his sack, tehm tested the grain of the wood and began drilling a ~2" deep hole, with the grain, into the corner of the 4"x4"x4" block of wood.

After drilling, the block was sawed down to a 2"x2"x2.5" block and tehm began carefully carving at the corners, gradually shaping the wood into a rounded cylinder. Once the rough work was completed, tehm set out with the rough sandpaper smothing out all of the knife marks and better refining the shape of the bowl. After several more pieces of increasingly finer grades of sandpaper tehm smiled in approval of the maple bowl he had created.

Taking the smaller hand drill he began making a small hole 3/4 down on the bowl being careful not to angle the hole in any way. Once he was completed he began slowly widening the hole with the tip of his carving knife. The coming part was the trickiest and if he made the hole too big then he would likely have to start over.

Smiling in satisfaction, tehm idly sanded down the edges and sides of the drilled holes.

(Now for the hard part...)

Using the biggest section of the scrap that remained of the original block, tehm carefully marked off a 3/4"x3/4"x2.5" section with the tip of his carving knife then set about drilling a hole with the small hand drill all the way through the length of it. After drilling he trimmed away all of the excess using the saw and then proceeded once again to round off the corners with the carving knife then sand it smooth with increasingly fine grits of sandpaper.

After carefully sanding the stem until it just barely fit into the hole drilled into the bowl tehm used the carving knife to cut an angled wedge into the stem at about a 30 degree angle then used the wood glue he had purchased to finally affix the stem to the bowl. It would take days for the glue to fully cure, but he had done it. He had a pipe.
