| SubclassBlacksmithToolsSmithing Tools SkillTongue of NatureRecipeResearch It was early, probably too early that day when Caerbannog found herself at St.Pancras Station. She’d stumbled there once again in search of something ‘new’ for her crafting class. So far from what she’d heard from most landers, it was difficult to create new recipes for her craft since most blacksmiths were used to just crafting weapons, armors and accessories- and they all fall under recipes that already existed. But who knows? Elder Tale had changed so much since the Catastrophe after all. It wouldn’t be weird if her fellow adventurers were able to come up with ideas that did not exactly fit the current crafting system and had to be researched.
The sun had just risen and the blacksmiths in that area of the Station had just finished preparing their forges and wares. Caerbannog passed by the lander Aldrin’s stall and she waved to greet him; he actually waved back- one of the few landers who did not throw quests and responsibilities on the samurai. After that brief stop, the glimmer of hope of not having to do any errands for a lander vanished when a large man stood in the wolf-hair’s way.
“Oh, an adventurer’s here so early eh?” growled the lander, “If you’re looking for a quest, I need some firewood and charcoal. How about you help me with my wood then, little lady?”
Was that a wink at the end? Did the big, scary, mean-looking, bald but bearded lander just wink at the schoolgirl samurai right after he asked her to help with his wood? Typical Caerbannog though, she just stared at the monstrosity before her. Aldrin, unfortunately, had his back turned to the scene since he was getting his slack tub ready. With no adventurer or lander to turn to and surrounded by strangers, the samurai summon Hyzenthlay.
“Hey there tamer, you need anything- WHOA THAT’S ONE BIG TROLL!” the enemic buster waved her club at the lander, not meaning to use it at all; the club waving was just a habit of hers.
One look at the elite beast made the lander back off, and when Hyzen actually took a step forward towards the man, he ran back to his stall. Caerbannog breathed a sigh of reply, picked up Hyzen and nuzzled the rabbit’s head. She wanted to hug Roo too, but calling them both out would cause trouble. Instead, the samurai summoned Roo whenever she was at the guild house, and called out Hyzen when she was out in the streets.
“Thankee, let’s go and look for some interesting things, okay?” the samurai said as she walked over to a lander’s display of various swords, but not before she toggled [Tongue of Nature] so that she’d finally be able to understand whatever Hyzen was saying.

Nisha reached the place just as the guy started to talk to caer, but since it did not seem interesting or fun to stop the conversation, she did not step in. Some landers were just too persistent when it came to quests, well, not that Nisha had a problem with that. If she did not want anything from a lander or was not looking for any kind of quest, she just moved through the area without listening to anyone. After all, there was no fun in being forced to do errands or small jobs. Sure, her ears perked up at the words reward or other buzz words, but which adventurer could withstand the promise of a grand adventure or a huge reward? Not Nisha that was for sure. But the reason she did not step in was also to see how caer who was a bit stingy with words took care of this guy and well, Nisha was curious if something interesting would happen, caer should be a high enough level to deal with about anything and if Nisha saw a lander flying through the air in the next few seconds, she would not even tilt her head at the sight in bewilderment. Nisha was not quite there yet, but she hoped to get there sooner rather than later, level wise, where caer was at now. But instead of talking or accepting the most likely meaningless and waste of time quest, caer had summoned some kind of big monster who was looking at people and was probably meant to intimidate everyone around with that wave. Nisha did not know if that was intended to happen, but she did not feel quite intimidated by the monster, if anything she was mildly interested why caer went to all that trouble to not talk and if she had recently tamed that one since she had not had it back when they had fought the golems. But what was it that stopped her from talking? Shyness? After what had happened that time she could not be so sure. Caer had given nari a lecture and then come up with a few words to make an interesting and funny exit with their 'child', scorias and caers that was. Well, not their real child... it was complicated apparently. Actually if anything, Nisha liked caer for it and how adorably interesting and fun she had been in the end.
Just remembering how caer and scoria had walked off, that weird glare on his face as always, which if anything made him look funny, she had to grin. Her grin widened at the thought of them making a status update 'relationship: complicated'. Nisha saw that the lander had gone to talk to some other victims, since after trying to talk Nisha into it after seeing her from his stand and being stared right through by the foxtail, who did not even consciously noticed him. He had given up on her as well and waited for someone interested in menial labor. As if in preparation to talking to caer, her tails, she had all four of them out, began to wag a little and she wondered how to approach her best. Just normally greeting her would be boring and would maybe warrant another wave of the whatever the name of the big monster she had out was. Which caer would most likely wear like an armor over her mouth and not talk again. No, she had to surprise her. Thinking for a second, she came up with several approaches, shrugged them all off and walked over to the samurai who was apparently a monster tamer with all the monsters walking around without attacking and would try to glomp her from behind, gently naturally. She had a friend who had glomped her that one time with full force and it was no fun and games afterwards, but a gentle glomp from the back with a look of curiosity in Nisha´s eyes would most likely be nice, right? And since caer was looking at stuff, she would add: "Hi caer, whatcha looking at?" If caer would evade or do whatever so that Nisha could not reach her, she would pout playfully and tilt her head after asking the same question.

| SubclassBlacksmithToolsSmithing Tools SkillTongue of NatureRecipeResearch Long swords, short swords, great swords, blades of various sizes, scythes big and small; the list went on. All of those were on display at a lander’s blacksmithing stall, samples of what he could craft. As expected though, they were of varying quality as if some were made in a rush while others were made exquisitely. Caerbannog thought about the purported difference between adventurer and lander skill, that basically, adventurers were better at a lot of things compared to landers. But it couldn’t be denied that the People of the Land knew more about certain things compared to adventurers for they’d been residents of Elder Tale even before the Catastrophe. Most of the knowledge that adventurers had about the game came from landers anyway, and only after the Catastrophe were people like the samurai able to explore the land with their own eyes and from their own perspective. In the samurai’s arms, Hyzen struggled just a little to get into a comfortable position. But after that, the rabbit merely looked at the very same wares that her tamer was looking at. It then came as a surprise to both when an ‘attack’ was launched from behind them. No guard appeared so clearly it was not an actual offensive move; apparently, Caerbannog was glomped. She turned around to see who was the culprit and was relieved to find Nisha there. Fox tails were always nice to look at and her fellow samurai was no exception. It would have been weird if she was glomped by some other person, for example, the dwarf Tobin. Yea.,. that would have been awkward. But while the wolf-hair smiled at Nisha, Hyzen was the exact opposite. “What the hell was that for?!” exclaimed the enemic buster, “I’ll wreck your face, you tart!”“Rude...” was Caerbannog’s first word to Hyzenthlay. It was simple enough for the rabbit to understand. “HUH?! Eeeeeeeeee?!” Hyzen put her tail and club down, obviously taken aback that she and her tamer could understand each other. “Please excuse Hyzen, overprotective like brother,” the wolf-hair said to Nisha, but notably Kumori did not wave his weapon at people, “Nice to see you! Looking at smithy things... want to research new stuff but no idea.”Hyzenthlay stared up at Caerbannog for the longest time and seemed to have forgotten about the glomping incident. All she wanted to know was how in the world did her tamer do that?! Sure the accent seemed a bit strange but really, the creatures of Elder Tale shouldn’t be able to communicate directly with landers and adventurers... right? RIGHT?! And so the rabbit just stared up at her tamer with its little mouth slightly agape. As for Caerbannog, she once again turned to the display but not before gesturing to Nisha to look at the wares with her. Perhaps the fox tail would be able to see or realize something that the wolf-hair had missed all along. WC: 485|| Code by Neun of ET. Artwork by Taamo. |

After succesfully flopping on caer, Nisha for a second had wondered if she would crash into the wares if she missed, caer did talk, but instead of a language Nisha could understand, something else. And apparently it was directed at a cute looking bunny thing, Nisha had weird tastes, who looked like it was about to be jumping into Nisha´s arms for whatever reason. Paying it not all that much heed, she looked over caer´s shoulder to see the display of all the weapons and other tools in front of her. Nisha had always wondered how long it had taken the landers to reach the levels of the adventurers, some had a weird kind of affinity for it and some were born or more likely had been created with a high level. And some lander never went above the usual level one they had, even though most of them had some kind of fight in them. But these blades and other kinds of weapons looked fine enough for your average blacksmith lander, even though Nisha definitely would not want to buy weapons from landers. She liked getting drops from monsters much more or finding someone to craft for her. Just one thing, one specific thing she had not yet been able to do. Finally caer spoke to her as well and Nisha wondered why she was excusing someone, maybe the rabbit?
Had she really just talked to it? Looking from rabbit to caer and back, she grinned and let go of caer, standing up again. Hanging on someone shorter was most likely not all too nice for both parties. "Nice to see you two, did you pick up a new skill? Or is that something tamers get at some level?" Nisha asked and wondered how high leveled caer would most likely be, if she leveled up at the same rate Nisha did at least, she would be way above her, but the subclasses were always another matter entirely, in comparison, hers were... well, they were definitely a little bit behind, but there was little to do about it, since she enjoyed fighting way too much. "Research, huh?" Nisha asked noticed something fitting to what she had just thought, due to accident or just plain coincidence, some of the weapons had intermingled. A grimoire had fallen on an axe, a staff had fallen on an sword and so on. Walking around caer, she picked both pairs up, but put the staff and sword back. Not minding the shop´s owners rising eyebrows, she showed both to caer as if she was proud about them already with a big smile on her face. "How about combining stuff, I am correct to think you are a blacksmith if you are looking at weapons to get research ideas, right?" Nisha asked and wondered if it would be possible to connect scribes and blacksmiths on a deeper level than ever before. She had many hybrid researches in mind, like a printing press for which she would need a mechanic and many more, but the most pressing matter was to combine the two things she wanted to wield without or at least with less accuracy debuff and being able to use them simultaneously. "How about it, it could be fun, you would not mind lending us your place for a while, right? Thanks." Nisha had said to the shop owner and handed him back his weapons with enthusiasm to which the shop owner seemed to give in.

| SubclassBlacksmithToolsSmithing Tools SkillTongue of NatureRecipeResearch Once Nisha let go of the wolf-hair, she looked at the wares and only glanced towards the fox-tail when a question was asked of her. Their encounter at Sarum did nothing to reveal their subclasses after all, and Caerbannog herself did not know what other capabilities Nisha had, aside from that of samurai. To avoid coming off as rude, when Caer answered the fox tail’s question, she made sure to look at her fellow samurai who’d taken the initiative to make their conversation more engaging.
“Tongue of Nature for adventurers,” she replied and pertained to an Adventurer skill that anyone could use, “Good for animal trainers like me.”
She would explain the second part, what with the skill working best with pet or summon classes due to the levels having the possibility of going higher, but Caerbannog once again thought too much about what she should say next. The moment passed and was soon too far off to be chased, and Nisha had followed up with a different question altogether. The fox tail was smart and deductive, a relief to the wolf-hair since she would not have to explain much verbally. All she had to do was to confirm things and the conversation would continue. Though it could not really be called a conversation what with the miniscule amount of words that the long-haired girl let out.
“Blacksmith, yes, Level 28,” was her reply, “What stuff to combine?”
At that point, her words were gibberish once again to Hyzenthlay. It led the rabbit to ask itself if the Lapine-sounding word earlier was just a slip or if it made a mistake and just though that its tamer spoke Lapine. Due to the confusion, the normally hyperactive enemic buster remained quiet and it just stared at the two adventurers. As for the lander who owned the space which Nisha wanted to borrow, he was conflicted with the request. Sure, he could maybe rent the spot to the two and have them pay him an outrageous sum, but he also had work to attend to. Seeing his facial expression and the lack of verbal confirmation from the man, Caerbannog called for Nisha’s attention.
“I know a guy!” which wasn’t very helpful, “I mean... over here!”
The wolf-hair then walked back to the way where she just came from before she ran across the tall lander who tried to make her gather wood. Caerbannog gestured for Nisha to follow, and looked behind her every now and then to make sure that the fox tail followed closely despite the crowd that was slowly forming at St.Pancras Station. In a short while, the long-haired samurai reached Aldrin’s stall. A lander blacksmith all the same, but she’d rented his space before and he was a rather kind acquaintance who looked out for the girl, mostly because he thought that she was some kid running around without her parents.
“So you’re back? Anything I can do for you today?” the lander nodded at Caerbannog.
“Rent this place please? Need research,” the girl asked and explained, “Also, need reference for different weapons.”
Aldrin scratched his chin for a while, turned to a small wooden cabinet in one corner of his space and returned with a thick old book. It had information on each and every weapon that landers could craft up to Level 5, but though the data was basic and probably known by adventurers who have crafted them. Meanwhile, Caerbannog turned to look for Nisha and would introduce her to the lander.

So it was an adventurer skill, huh? Nisha had never paid all too much attention to the skills that were not in the samurai skill tree, since most if not all her skills she could find she found there, but for there to be such an interesting and funny skill to be had there. Just thinking about it made her shiver, having fun talking with monsters all around without anyone able to tell what she was saying. But then again, it was not very helpful for a scribe and an exorcist. Exorcist wanted to exterminate ghosts and knowing their stories usally lead to intricate and complicated side quests with sobstories here and there, maybe even a ghost love triangle throwin into the mix with a strawberry on top. As for a scribe... Nisha could not imagine that the monsters available for the moment had any information or intellect beyond that of the landers. Maybe once they reached the higher levels or even legendary, they would have wisdom that would be very wise to jot down in books and on scrolls, depending on how long the story was, maybe they would even know knowledge they could use for advanced technologies and spells. But right now, Nisha saw no real need to attain that skill. Maybe after they had taaken sarum, after all the planning to take it was going full force and who knew what kind of monsters would await them beyond the fields of sarum´s battlefield.
Nisha was not even aware that in all her trying to get more words out of the treasue chest that was caer, she actually was talking too fast, but that was just how she rolled and went on. Since her question had been answered she did not look back much and just went on with the next barrage of words. Maybe it was indeed no wonder, so many people had gone and ignored or maybe been so flooded with words and actions of her, that they had not seen handshakes hovering, heard her ask for names or other such basic concepts that Nisha loved to overlook in a game. After all, the names were right there, for most players at least to read, handshakes in a game were rather... unocnventional since it was neither necessary nor needed. But for Nisha, maybe for her alone, who knew, immersion was the one thing she wanted to attain, after all they were inside the game now, with no way out that Nisha or anyone she knew, knew of. Immersion was as easy as shaking hands, literally. But really, level 28, huh? Nisha had expected at least level 50 or something from caer, not that she was disappointed, rather it made her happy to know that even for caer there were things she was maybe a bit more down to earth, just like anyone around them. Something people could reach. Her tails wagged a bit as she heard it, or rather the wagging became stronger and her tails now looked like grass in the wind, rhythmic moving from one side to the other, hypnotically, clockwork like. Being a bit startled as caer spoke up and got her attention really well by doing so, she chuckled a moment at caer´s statement.
She knew a guy, nice, maybe her husbando scoria? Ah, maybe it was another person who could help. Following caer, Nisha turned around quickly and stuck her tongue out toward the shop owner which services were not being used anymore with a grin in her eyes while doing so, nearly running into caer who had stopped at the next shop over. Apparently someone she knew. As said, Nisha did not really know anyone around here, so caer knowing the area was a big help already. Who knew if they had to have paid money for the other shop, though Nisha would have maybe just dinedashed. Turning aound again to face the lander, he looked at least more trustworthy than the other one already, if only because caer had come to this one to craft. "Hi there, my name is Nisha, nice to meet you." Nisha said to the lander and took his hand and shook it, if anything the landers were even less productive when it came to shaking hands or greetings beyond a wave. "Hope you are gonna let us use your rooms for a bit, I really wanna try something out and do this with my friend, please?" Her tails were still going at the same pace as she looked back to caer and her monster companions, wondering briefly if the lander would react to them as well, since before caer had just scared away one. "So, is there a good story behind each of your friends? Or would it be better if I say family, sorry if I am wrong, but I got that impression that time when you and scoria went off together." Nisha smiled and nodded at the two monsters in front of her, acknowledging them as what they were and yet not being hostile at all, if anything, enjoying them being here, even if that may not be said of both parties.

| SubclassBlacksmithToolsSmithing Tools SkillTongue of NatureRecipeResearch To say that the lander was surprised by Nisha’s gesture was an understatement. He was rather shocked, but halfway through the handshake, Aldrin’s hand warmed up and he put his other hand on the fox tail’s as they finished the greeting. He’d never seen an adventurer who was quite as enthusiastic as her, and Caerbannog was a far cry from being such a person. So when the fox tail requested of him something similar to what the wolf-hair asked before, the lander gave them a hearty laugh.
“Haha, of course, of course. How can I refuse two adorable girls eh?” Aldrin said as he motioned towards the low cabinet full of research material, “Well, I guess I’ll call this a day and go home to my own adorable little ladies. Twins, to be precise. I’m sure they will be happy to see their Papa home so early.”
Caerbannog bowed towards the man and she put some money in his hands, the rent for the day which was similar to what they’d agreed on before. Aldrin nodded at the two samurais and he was on his way, apparently pleased with the turn of events. He trusted the wolf-hair to be careful with his furnace and things anyway, so all would be well. As for Kyuu, she took up the book full of basic equipment information and read up on the different kinds of swords which was most likely what a samurai like Nisha would need.
“Hyzenthlay, an Enemic Buster...” she looked at Nisha momentarily, and then she settled into one of the chairs near the work table, “Kind of a mini-boss of the frenmic rabbits.”
The blacksmith then held up the book for Nisha to see. It was opened up to some entries that listed many kinds of swords. On the left page there were drawings and short descriptions of European swords, while the right side showed East-Asian ones.
“Which one? Probably Japanese sword, right?” Caerbannog asked, “Or maybe a spear or a bow?”
The wolf-hair was only thinking along the lines of equipment for samurai, seeing as the fox tail was one. She knew that the class would be able to use most melee weapons, but more specifically, and if Nisha wanted to keep the samurai theme, then the weapon which could be opted for was one of three: sword, spear, bow. Though her own bow was made of wood and thus crafted by a woodcrafter, metal bows were not unheard of especially in fantasy MMORPGs. It might be slightly difficult to work with and to wield, but it was not impossible to create. Then again, the fox tail could request an armor or accessory instead. And as for the thing with which it was to be combined with, Caerbannog still had no idea in that regard.
“Oh! Combine with what?” was her concise question.
As for Hyzenthlay, the enemic buster merely sat on an empty chair close to her tamer. She’d hopped onto the spot while the lander and the adventurers were conversing, and had taken to watching Caerbannog flip through pages of the book. Occasionally, the creature also glanced at the fox tail but only to make sure that no weapon or item was about to be thrown at the rabbit’s tamer.

Nisha was glad that her handshake had been accepted and the lander had even actively done something. Slowly but surely Nisha was coming to the conclusion that there were classes of lander, gradable by their ability to interact. Some of them would go about their day without reacting to anything aside from maybe if you ran into them or punched them, Nisha had not tried that one yet since it did not seem funny to just punch someone to find out. This one was definitely a higher grade of a lander seeing how he was programmed to act and react like this. It brought an honest smile to Nisha´s face, the first in a while. "Haha, yeah, that sounds nice. Take good care of them and buy them a nice present sometime, everyone likes them. And don´t worry, we will try not to break anything." Nisha chuckled a little and looked back to caer wondering if she knew her way around the forge here, since Nisha had heard somewhere that each forge has a very different song to it, though in a game these things were usually standardized. Just like the weapons usually were, but in this game there was a bigger variety than in any other game ever created due to players being able to come up with stuff on the spot. Just like they were now attempting to do. Also, there was this weird feeling Nisha had had since yesterday. It was weird, but not quite unfamiliar to her. It was the creation of a new tail, usually that could take a little while and would pop into being some time soon, as if the code had to be sorted out and added and it being a process game and not a loading screen one it had to happen while playing. It was always a weird thing when it happens, it looked like one tail split into two and the rest arranged themself with it and made some space.
"Good morning, Hyzenthf... hyzel... Hazel." Nisha said toward the bunny and nodded with her head, a smile on her mouth and with a polite tone. She did not really know how to greet a monster, so she chose to be polite, seeing that he was a mini mini-boss. Turning back to caer Nisha wondered if caer would translate for hazel and then translate it´s answer as well. Being asked by caer what kind of weapon she wanted to try, Nisha said: "Well I would really like one with a bigger grip, so we have more to try with. So either a spear or an axe. Though I would rather try an axe, I always wanted to wield an axe in a game, but usually they lose out to most other weapons statwise, sadly. So far my idea is to either write on the handle to create an effect or use a whole grimoire on it. In the end I guess any weapon can be combined if you find out how to get it to work. Got any other ideas or maybe advice, I don´t really know how blacksmithing works here." Nisha asked and picked up a basic grimoire that lay on the table with all the wares, looking at it from side to side and seeing that it was bound to the trader, so stealing was not an option. Not that she had wanted to, but she really wanted to get a better weapon. And the thing she wanted the most was a weapon with a good attack strength and something she could use magic with as well. She would not even mind if there would be a little stat decrease to either side or whatever would be added as a disadvantage. And in the end, the idea of hybrid weapons was not too far off, so she would not be surprised if it would be easier than it seemed.

| SubclassBlacksmithToolsSmithing Tools SkillTongue of NatureRecipeResearch Unlike the landers who usually stayed away from the enemic buster, Nisha actually greeted the creature. Caerbannog responded with a nod, and then she looked at the rabbit.
“Nisha said good morning to you,” the samurai tried to say as clearly as she could, though her accent of course was nowhere close to a real frenmic rabbit’s.
Once again, that elicited a surprised look from Hyzenthlay but she wasn’t a fool. It was obvious that the tamer could actually talk to her and it wasn’t just a fluke, and so the rabbit calmed down soon enough and looked at the person who greeted her who was apparently named ‘Nisha’. It was simple enough to be pronounced thus there was no confusion on the enemic buster’s part.
“Good morning!” Hyzen said in Lapine and she accompanied the greeting with a wave of her left paw; her club was tucked away behind her, beneath her tail.
Though the greeting sounded like squeak to adventurers, the enemic buster’s wave seemed remotely friendly though pessimists could probably interpret it not as a greeting but as a farewell to the elite creature’s next victim. Nisha was anything but a victim though, and Hyzen was civilized enough to recognize her tamer’s acquaintances. After the brief wave and such, Hyzen plopped down on the chair and crossed her arms in front of her teeny tiny chest. She observed the adventurers, half hoping that they would attempt to talk to her so that she could figure out how much they knew about the language of the wild.
Meanwhile, Caerbannog looked over a different section of the book which she just put up. So the fox tail did not want a sword which was the usual weapon for samurai, but rather she wanted a spear or an axe. Also, apparently the item that was to be combined with it turned out to be a grimoire. Who was it that created them? Scribes like Scoria and Oxford, right? Once again, the wolf-hair nodded at her fellow samurai as she turned to the pages of her book which pertained to grimoires. It was a magic book which was made for mage classes, but of course, the ever-changing world of Elder Tale made almost anything possible. Perhaps subclasses had something to do with wielding certain weapons as well; it was something that the wolf-hair was familiar with since her own blacksmith crafting class allowed her to wear plate armor without a penalty.
“Which class creates grimoires?” came her question to Nisha, “And can they write on metal, wood or leather? Or just on paper?”
Perhaps some information on the manner of writing would have been useful as well. Etching something was different from branding or writing with ink after all. But that could be a question for some other time, as the ones that the girl asked were the most important at that moment. If she wanted to figure out how to combine two different kinds of weapons created by different crafters, then she should first figure out what materials she needed and could work with.

The wave of the little monster did not go unnoticed to Nisha and she waved back a little, seeing that apparently caer had been able to communicate with the bunny. Maybe the skill was not so uninteresting after all, but for Nisha who was not a tamer... well, it was worth thinking about it next time she read through the skills she would choose for her next level. But right now, something else was a bit more important, the research of hybrid weapons and all that encompassed. But then again, that squeaking was just too adorable and caer trying to get through to the bunny looked like an interesting thing to observe and maybe think back on when Nisha was bored. Ah, languages, it was nice that they were all speaking the same language as adventurers and Nisha wondered if at some point of the game people from other countries would come over to england and they would have to bridge the language barrier with them as well. Maybe scribes would be needed then to come up with a dictionary for each language or maybe some kind of self translating paper... Shaking her imaginative head in her mind, she shrugged off the thought and tried to concentrate on the present again. Indeed though, Nisha had never taken much care about finding out if there was any limit to what she could write on, but in the end, it should not really matter as long as she would be able to write the words on it. All in all, the grimoires just allowed anyone who could do so to actually channel their mana into a small bolt of energy and direct it at someone.
Explaining that concept to caer in a few words, that could have come straight from the tutorial, and most likely did, Nisha opened her inventory and took out some materials. She had bought these before if she should ever have to use them. All of them low grade, but what better to use for experimenting? "Well, as for what we can write on, I honestly don´t know, but I guess it works best with paper or parchment. For a beginners grimoire you use these things." Nisha said and showed her a quill, some ink and old wrinkly paper. "And then you just sit down and craft all these together to create a grimoire. Not very difficult, but it can take some time to write up all the things needed in there. Also I don´t know if I can write all that on the blade, even if it is a small book, it is a book and I don´t think it would fit on it." Nisha said with a shrug, after all, they could try, but she would have to write very very tiny, even tinier than the teeny tiny paws of hazel to make it work. And then there was also the problem of the channeling. In the end, it would most likely just not work or dissipate before it even reached the blade and the writing. "I think we would be safer if I wrote on paper and maybe made it in a scroll form, that is wrapped around the hilt. Maybe even add the binding on top to make it more durable. The mana jsut has to flow into it after all. The only thing I wonder is where the bolt should be created. Maybe it would just appear at the hilt, but maybe with a small bit of ink running inside the blade, we could make it appear at the tip of the blade, or seeing as it is an axe, at the end of the handle. Adding more reach to it." Nisha said and scratched her own ears, her fluffy tails twitching in tact. There was too many things to think about on her own, so she would wait for caers input and work from there. After all it was a group effort, even though hazel did not do anything, he was likely a mascot for this particular research so he had a function as well, aside from looking cute.

| SubclassBlacksmithToolsSmithing Tools SkillTongue of NatureRecipeResearch After Hyzenthlay plopped her fluffy bottom down to just observe the adventurers, the blacksmith and the scribe began to brainstorm for their research. Their discussion was indeed spontaneous for the wolf-hair did not expect to meet the fox-tail that day, much less start a research with her and regarding hybrid weapons, no less. As Nisha pulled out her materials, Caerbannog’s first question was answered. Her fellow samurai was a Scribe just like Scoria and Oxford. They worked with writings and such, that much the wolf-hair knew, but beyond that she knew nothing. Apparently, the grimoires were crafted specifically by their class; she did think it slightly odd that a samurai wielded a book, but since Nisha was a scribe, it all made sense. Truthfully, it was an interesting mix, a magic swordswoman of sorts.
Back to the discussion at hand, Caerbannog nodded to acknowledge Nisha’s explanations. The fox-tail’s dilemma regarding the length of text which must be written was a legitimate one and it should be addressed somehow. Wrapping paper or parchment within the handle of a sword was one thing, but it would not work as easily for other weapons. An ax, for example, had a solid handle made of either wood or metal. Another thing that piqued the wolf-hair’s attention was the mention of putting ink within the blade. Something that she studied in college, though one that she did not like much but appreciated nonetheless, came to mind: logic circuitry.
“Writing whole book is long and tedious...” Caer stated something so obvious but I swear she has a point, “Does grimoire language have shorthand version?”
There was an idea. Like in the real world where words could be abbreviated, was it possible to do the same in Elder Tale? It would probably make spells weaker, but in conjunction with the other capabilities of a hybrid weapon, then everything should add up.
“Or use keywords,” the blacksmith suggested, “Like uhm... kotodama... just one word has a powerful meaning.”
Okay, so maybe that wasn’t viable. It might tread into the territory of sigilmakers, but unlike a sigil, she thought that scribes could have keywords that were related specifically to what they would be able to do. But it was only an idea given by a blacksmith who had never worked with grimoires; Nisha would have to consider it based on her experience as a scribe. As for the ink within the blade-
“Can make something like... magic circuit in blade, yes!” the wolf-hair’s eyes lit up as she nodded at the fox-tail, “Make grooves and then magic goes through it using ink!”
The blacksmith could perhaps etched out the thinnest of grooves on half the blade which would be enough to let the magical ink flow, and through it, mana from the user would also flow. For a moment, she thought about the feasibility of etching a grimoire as a magic circuit within the blade, but she had no knowledge as a scribe and Nisha had not been a blacksmith before, so that was out of the question.

Nisha thought she knew kotodama, but as she mulled it over while listening and being happy that caer was talking this much to her, even if it was just snippets, she wondered what it meant. Maybe some japanese word for runes or something? Indeed, it would be nice if she could cut down on the content of what was needed to create effects of a grimoire, but... She had tried these before and had been able to cut down the word count quite something, but there was also the addition of the word she had used before. Maybe if she really thought of this as code, she could change some things up, make sentences repeat with phrases. "Gimme a second, I may be able to cut down substantially with this idea. You see, magic words in the end are like code. Just like with decryption codes or computer codes, if you add or realign certain phrases you can cut down on them and create sentences out of one word. Maybe even a letter if I play my cards right." Picking up a piece of old charcoal, she walked over to a piece of wood and took her grimoire with her, her tail was now totally silent and not flopping anymore, since she was now deeply concentrated on her task. Trying to figure this out could be weirdly fun and help her in creating more things where she would not have to write all the words down anymore. Actually, maybe if she did it right, she could find out if there was a way to create new sentences and effects by just changing up small bits in the compiled codes, maybe even create new ones for very different usages. Actually, she had to take into account that she would not write in a book as well, so she right away changed the words for book to weapon, which was much more general but worked on a more basic level and should work with everything weapon for now. Once she got down with weapons and found other uses, she could maybe move on to even armor and be able to create effects on them as well, a slow shiver ran up and down her spine bushing up her tail for a second as she thought about the possibilites. Opening the grimoire up and browsing through the pages, she had noticed it several times before, but many sentences repeated most likely to channel mana and create an effect, but what if she compiled all those lines into the most prominent characters and those through which most mana was channeled and changed. It was an interesting idea and reminded her of her flying paper. Well, it was not even close to the flying carpet made out of paper or a paper flier big enough to transport people, but it used words like this as well. Just that they had a very basic idea behind each other. "Hrmm... If I add this and maybe do this, turn this and add a letter here..." Nisha was working concentrated, but still found it in her to think about the other thing caer had told her. So she could actually create a wired connection, huh?
It would definitely be more useful than to shoot it directly from the handle and would not break up the battle if they would stop for a second to shoot the magic, but could rather fire it right in the middle of battle and maybe even strengthen the strike with a bolt of magic. She had also thought about making the weapon fire a blade everytime it was swung, but that seemed like pretty advanced stuff and they should be glad if they even got this much done. "And no, sadly no one has come up with a shortened version of this yet, not that I can´t imagine people tried, but I did not hear of everyone having been able to, neither scoria nor oxford, the only two other scribes I know." Nisha added another word to the row of letters and slowly it looked like a formula or a sentence itself. It could with the added strengthening word she had discovered before potentially actually be as strong as a beginner grimoire, but not as strong as the other grimoire she had discovered. Even though the actual strength of the mana bolt would definitely rely on the strength of mana used to create the bolt. "I think this string should be enough to create the potentially same effects as a beginner grimoire, usually it would not, but if you add the perimeter of it strengthening the process, being able to carter more and advanced mana as well as refining the string of words by leaving out the extras... Yes, I think this should work." Nisha said and grinned at caer. Sure, Nisha would have to try it out, but she wanted to hear what caer would say first before doing so, since if she thought it would not lead to anything or had an idea how to make it better, what was the point of even wasting energy? "I just wonder how we should go about the hybrid part, I mean, should I write the words while the metal is still hot so the words are really etched into it? Or rather wait till it cools down, but then it does not seem like a team effort and rather like us two doing our things and just adding to each other."

| SubclassBlacksmithToolsSmithing Tools The language of adventurers was something that Hyzenthlay came to understand little by little with each conversation that was held between her tamer and the people around the wolf-hair. One word in particular which was repeated by both Caerbannog and Nisha made the rabbit’s ears twitch up as she paid more attention. ‘Grimoire’, the adventurers said. It seemed to be referring to the rectangular block of something that the fox-tail held onto. Hyzen noticed that the ‘grimoire’ had more things in it, things that fluttered when the item was opened. The enemic buster had seen other adventurers with such items and she remembered that they used it to draw a sparkly thing out which were usually thrown at her face. So, a grimoire was a weapon? Hyzenthlay frowned. She would have to keep an eye on adventurers when they drew out such rectangular items. Perhaps a club to the face would make them consider putting the ‘grimoire’ away?
The enemic buster’s murderous thoughts were hidden behind its pretty face though, and so Caerbannog continued to observe her fellow samurai instead of paying attention to whatever Hyzenthlay was up to. At that moment, the rabbit merely sat on the same spot and did not seem to be aiming to clobber anyone and so the wolf-hair’s attention remained on the scribe. The blacksmith was interested in scribe work due to their handling of books, but once she glanced at the writings and texts, her interest faded away. It seemed rather complicated, and she was not keen on having to study writing things again for she’d already graduated from that in the real world. Blacksmithin itself already took a large chunk of her time and effort due to its difference from cooking; if anything, the girl could probably switch to being a pharmacist if she wanted to keep a craft which was similar to her being a chef. But Caerbannog already knew of at least one good pharmacist, Capsule, and she did not think it a good idea to take up something that would make their small world redundant. She could just call the enchanter and request a potion, perhaps. But that was a thought for another time and merely a passing conversation with herself while her eyes were on Nisha’s scribe work.
The wolf-hair nodded at the fox-tail and she muttered a hushed ‘I see...’ when the latter responded negatively to the question about a shorthand version. Perhaps it could be something that someone would be able to look into in the future for the arrival of adventurers did change things for Elder Tale. But all that was reserved for a different time and place, since the task at hand was to create hybrid weapons with the knowledge and skills available to them at that moment. While Nisha worked on her craft, Caer took up some research material regarding etching and she skimmed through the pages. It was simple enough to do but would be rather dangerous if done incorrectly; but thankfully, it was just like how one would create a circuit board in the real world though the covering step was reversed.
“Carving into hot metal would make uneven paths...” she pointed out to Nisha, “This is more like two crafters doing two separate steps but, simpler way I think. Ever made a circuit board?”
The blacksmith then took a flat, rectangular piece of steel and motioned over it. She traced a line on the steel using some iron dusting which provided a darker color which could easily be washed off. Caerbannog merely wrote a massive letter C on the plate.
“If we need to etch out this C so that it would be a deep path in the steel, cover the outside parts with ink and let it dry out,” the wolf-hair said, “Then leave the metal in a vat of acid.”
It was not part of their deal but eh, the blacksmith figured that the lander Aldrin would not mind so much if they used some of his things. Caer could pay him back later. And so she rummaged through one of the cabinets of materials and found a bottle of copper sulfate along with some bottles of salt and baking soda. The latter were also ingredients for chef recipes, but the girl remembered well that they were more than just for cooking. The samurai frowned at the bit of chemistry that was needed for the task, but it was better than having to heat and re-heat a piece of metal which could deform the thing.
“Try working on this,” the wolf-hair took up a narrowed piece of steel and began to work on it using a hammer and anvil after it was briefly shoved into the furnace. A small blade fit for a pocket knife had soon taken shape. It was crude but workable for their experiment, “Put ink on everything but the part where you want grooves to be made. Scribe work will make better circuit than just random paths that someone like me can make.”
The blade was dropped into the quenching bucket where it made a sizzling sound as it cooled down, and then Caerbannog placed it on the work table in front of Nisha. Once the coating process was done, Caer would put work gloves on, once again from Aldrin’s stash, and she would pour water, salt and copper sulfate in a small vat in which the blade could be soaked. The mixture would at first be blue in color and afterwards, once the process was done, it would turn as transparent as water. Either way, the mixture was dangerous so it would be best for the crafters to stand aside while the acid was working on the blade.

While Caer was tempering the blade, Nisha was thinking how to best do this, she had some experience with grimoires, but this was definitely new territory she wanted to cross into. She had already found that certain words held certain powers, some to strengthen it and some to execute certain functions. It was like code in a computer, any command or word had it´s own set of uses and some of those uses could be bypassed and taken away without hurting the code, some times even making the code stronger and more flexible. Taking off the restraints so to say. Making Nisha wonder if there was a way to come up with new lines of code, create new commands for certain different things. Certainly that was advanced thinking and tinkering and nothing she could do in the spur of a moment, but it was an interesting thought none the less. Following what she had found out, even inserting one or at least a few dozen lines over a blade should produce at least some of the effect a grimoire had. Most important was the channeling and accepting of mana, without it, no effect could ever be created anyway, so it had to start as close to the hand as possible, the other lines could then transform the mana into an actual effect like creating a mass of energy that was harmful and leading it up the blade, making Nisha wonder in which direction she should write the lines each. Maybe it would be interesting to actually make some circle to gain power. After all, she would not be able to write a whole book on the blade, but if she let the words circle around a little and build up power the effect should be that much more powerful. A loop so to speak that would accumulate energy and commands.
A flash of inspiration hit Nisha as she thought about the ending of the writing. If she were to really do the loop and all that how would she be able to make the energy come out on top? It was pretty easy, rhymes and an ongoing sentence that would drag on in inverted loops until it reached the end. Yes, the end, that would be the single '.' in it and would be the point to it all, literally and figuratively. And the beginning would be the only uppercase word, each loop ended with a comma and started the next loop until it reached the last loop where it would spiral backwards again and run into the end part. Four such circuits seemed like a good idea to have for now, as she got better maybe she could add more of these circuits to the blade and strengthen the effect. For the test though it would do quite well. And so far, if Nisha did not mess up, she had no doubt it would at least produce some sort of a result. The question was if it was the desired one or not. So far it seemed sound to Nisha, just like in the book where the mana flowed freely inside the book and accumulated energy, producing the effect at the desired location. It would be an interesting beat to tame and what was all the more important to her, something new, something she had created with Caer and something that might really matter at some point, magic and technology, magic and weapons, magic and... there were so many applications that Nisha´s head was buzzing for the split moment of time she thought about it. Ah, it might become something glorious.
"I see, well, let´s try this." Tongue in between lips, highly concentrated, Nisha began to work on the blade, producing the anti area to the symbols, cutting them out with ink, trying to picture the words in her mind, writing and producing, creating the symphony and the circuits, which was a good word for it, Nisha thought to herself and wondered why Caer was so quiet, maybe it was because she only spoke when she had something important or good to say, but Nisha would not mind hearing something stupid out of her too. As they said, people are even more cute the more adorable they are. A slight smile appeared on Nisha´s face as she finished the first circuit, seeing that she had quite little space, the blade was quite short after all, but it also forced her to keep it concise and don´t add too many extras. though she did add both their names in the circuits as she told the story on the blade of the blade with the blade and about the magic. Leading the words along to the finish, second circuit, Nisha´s hands were now black with ink as she moved along and applied the ink, writing more words. Secret code delivered upon it, third one. All in all, it was good work and since she had already some experience with the words, she knew what kind of words to use were, verbs, nouns and adjectives and all their other different forms, flowing into each other like a river and all ending, like a real story with a dot. Sighing and breathing in for what seemed to be the first time in a while, hungry for air, Nisha stepped back a little applying the last of the ink around the tip of the weapon, leaving the very tip, the point-y bit free of ink. Sighing relieved that she also apparently now knew how to work with ink, she threw a glance at Caer, nodding and giving her the okay, stepping back further and leaning against a pillar, her arms crossed behind her back. Massaging her spine which was weirdly hardened from the ways she had to lean over the blade while she had worked on it.
"Ah, this is backbreaking work, though I have to say your idea was great, invert writing with ink and applying it like that is really no cake walk." Nisha´s stomach grumbled silently at the mention of cake and she wondered how long she had written for. It had seemed like less than a minute, but it must have been quite some time. "Want to grab a bite to eat once we are done? I feel famished and I think if we succeed we have earned some reward food." Chuckling, Nisha looked at Caer´s pet for a second before looking back at Caer who was applying the acid and making the blade steam with poisonous gases. By the next time, Nisha wanted to find a better way for this, but for now it would have to do. The only thing that worried Nisha a little was if it would truely be accepted as the code it was, or if it would just react slightly or lose itself or something like that. But then again, she had to have confidence, at least enough until she knew what the outcome was. Also, with the promise of cake if it worked or something else sweet, she knew she had as much confidence and trust in her own ability as she needed. Caer´s ability was never under doubt for Nisha anyway, so she just had to wait for the outcome. Having a little time in between waiting for the blade to become a finished weapon and testing it out, Nisha squirmed a little, nervousity and anxiety building up and making her feel queasy, hoping she had not just wasted Caer´s time on a useless venture. That would be the real kick into her mood. Even telling herself that she had done the best she could did not really help and only knowing definitely if she had failed or not would squeeze the doubt away.

| SubclassBlacksmithToolsSmithing Tools Tags@dindeen Nisha This is my 666th post! Acid etching was truly easier said than done, and while Nisha worked on the circuit, Caerbannog wondered about the odd lines and curves that the other adventurer left on the blade. After the item was sufficiently coated, the blacksmith began the process of applying aid on the exposed parts. She did it carefully, not only to make sure that the blade would not be destroyed by the acid but also because she did not want to lose an eye in the process. The crafted weapon then made a light fizz as the acid worked its way through it, and once the circuit’s pattern was deep enough, Caerbannog put the item in the quench tub which would neutralize the corrosive substance. “Aha!” the wolf-hair pointed at the etched weapon as the circuit became more apparent. It would work well enough for their purpose, which was to craft a hybrid weapon based on the capabilities of a blacksmith and a scribe. But Caerbannog did consider its implications; if there was no blacksmith to craft the base weapon or no scribe to draw the circuit, then the recipe would be pointless. At the same time, she did not want to make the recipe too easy either. It would not be something that can be BS’d by any crafter. The blacksmith would need some knowledge in scribe work and would be able to create better hybrid weapons. The scribe was the same, although they could skip the item metal weapon crafting by purchasing a premade weapon. The point of Caerbannog’s research with other people was to make recipes available to more than just her own crafting classes, chef and blacksmith. While she was an active adventurer, there was no telling if she would be active forever and locking out recipes to the very boring blacksmith or rarely used chef would be inconvenient for other people. As for the blade, it was soon done as the acid was neutralized completely. With protective gloves in her hands, the blacksmith pulled the item out of the quench tub and set it on the table. She then began to tidy up the work area while Hyzenthlay looked on. In the mean time, Nisha was free to inspect the crafted blade. Aldrin’s work station was soon neat again with the furnace dead and the quench tub emptied. It was now time for- “Cakes and cookies!” the wolf-hair samurai exclaimed as she threw her work gloves to the side, picked up Hyzenthlay and put the big rabbit on her head, “Let’s go!”Caerbannog let her fellow samurai keep the blade. As a blacksmith, she would be able to create her own metal items, unlike Nisha. Now the only thing to read up on was Ancient Script, which would probably a challenge in itself since Caer was not a scribe. There was room for improvement to her craft though, and she could take this opportunity to learn. Afterwards, the wolf-hair led Nisha out of the busy merchant and crafters area to a quiet place for some sweets and tea. WC: 505 || Code by Neun of ET. Artwork by Taamo. |
