Now that Faen thought about it, he had done a lot of those mandatory “Welcome to the Game” types of quests in all of the other MMOs he picked up in high school. The ones that had you deliver messages or the like under the pretense of getting your bearing of the beginning area. The ones that provided the minimal amount of experience that the game masters were willing to give. The time wasters, the very tedious tasks that no one liked to do, but had to.
He found himself doing the very same thing in the world of Elder Tale.
But this time was different. This time he actually had to physically walk everywhere and talk to the people and hand them the object, in this case, a missive given to him by the guard he had approached when he had awoken.
Inside the Game.
While Faen was worried about not being able to log out at the current time, he couldn’t help but be excited. He was now part of the stories he wrote. He didn’t need to advance the plot by writing it, he just needed to act! He wasn’t Faen Retsugaya, 20 year old creative writer and English major.
He was Retsu, a budding Human Samurai with the potential to do great things. An adventurer, as the People of the Land called him when he was playing his bard.
Retsu smiled at the notion of the sheer possibility of what he would accomplish as he handed over the missive to the hulking mass of a man that was the Guard Captain apparently. He bore the trappings of a Monk, a wicked looking fist weapon attached to his side. His armor was rather bulky looking leather. Not a very smart choice since leather wasn’t meant to burden the wearer, but he wasn’t about to question the game design when Retsu himself was but a level 1 Samurai in starter gear with a Starter Nodachi strapped to his back. Retsu had to give credit to the game designer though. He may have been wearing identical armor to what a guardian might start off with stat wise, his bore a more eastern motif than the typical heavy armor a guardian would wear.
The guard captain looked Retsu over, as if he was trying to get a measure of the Samurai’s worth. After he was done, he gave a slight nod and proceeded with what seemed like scripted dialogue.
“The name's Draco, and I’m the guard captain of Londinium. Seeing as my guards thought you might be of some use to us, I’m going to have you go out and dispose of some nuisances outside the town walls. Specifically speaking, the Young Pittered Boars and Dull Green slimes that have been straying too close to the roads for our merchants’ liking. Kill 3 of each, and report back to me for your reward, young samurai!”
Retsu nodded and did a bit of a salute towards the guard captain, replying with an emphatic, "It will be as you say, sir!” before he turned heel and made his way towards the town gate in question, following both his mini map and the geographical mental map in his head. As he was walking, he scoffed slightly at how very generic he acted when he accepted that quest. He was getting a bit too into this. But then again, Retsu didn’t care, he should make the best of his situation, as he had done all of his life.
Retsu reached the town gate in a matter of minutes by foot, even with him taking in the marvel of his surroundings, he was used to the majority of a town being a back drop on his screen, but now he was walking the streets, feeling the slight breeze of wind blowing through his blue hair, and hearing the clanking of his armor as he walked.
As Retsu stepped foot outside the town boundaries, he moved his left hand to the hilt of his Nodachi. He wanted to make this a habit, so he was going to force himself to do it until it became a habit. He didn’t know how long he might be trapped here, and he knew at later levels, dying was pretty common. But he wasn’t quite sure how dying would affect him in this game yet. Maybe that was the key to becoming free? Retsu wasn’t going to try and find out himself.
