The Darker of Two Evils

Lillian sighed as she stepped into the forest area of Lindonium. She held her axe in one hand, swinging it in circles. She may not have looked it, but the girl was strong. Sure, she had lanky looking arms, and was a bit on the thinner side of life, but she was toned with muscle. She snapped her neck to the left and then the right and then circled her shoulders to stretch out her muscles. She took in a deep breath and took the axe in both of her hands. She stared at the trunk of the tree for a moment, letting her mind focus on her current task. Once she was ready, she swung the axe behind her, and then swung it much harder into the trunk. It hit it, but barely made a dent. She raised her left eye brow and took a deep breath, swinging back and then forward with twice as much force. Her head tilted and she lowered her head. "You have got to be kidding me.. This is shit.." She was, of course, talking about her low, low, low level. If it took this much just to take two small notches out of the tree, it would take her a year to cut down the tree she needed. She gritted her teeth and then her eyes widened. She licked her lips and opened her skill screen.

As she pressed down on the skill she wanted to use, her voice called out and she stuck her hand in the air, her index finger pointing upwards and her thumb pointing outwards. "It's Showtime!" A glowing yellow spotlight appeared over her head and after a short moment, she could move again. She felt her eye twitch and her mouth frowned. "It's just like back home.. only worse.." She couldn't help but cringe even more as the whole move replayed through her head. She shook it, trying to shake it out, but it remained. She would have to find some way to do the move herself, if she even could.. Anyway! It was time to get back to work. Though [Showtime!] didn't actually raise her level, it was supposed to have an effect on the items she was crafting, so she hoped it would make cutting the trunk a little easier. What she would have given for a chainsaw at that moment. No, really, she probably would have given up a leg, or food for the next week just to have a chainsaw to cut down the tree, but she didn't so she had to work with what she had.

She swung the ax again, pulling back and then swung it forward with all of her might. She smirked, blowing a kiss to the tree. The notch was much larger now, pretty much five or six previous swings. She didn't hesitate, she kept swinging and swinging. The skill wouldn't last forever and she knew she had to take advantage of it, lest she would have to wait for it's cooldown time and she just wasn't patient enough. Soon, however, the tree was half cut and Lillian found herself collapsing on the ground. "Good God.. I wonder if I can just buy wood.." She took a few breaths and shook her head, standing back up. "No! I can do this!" It had already been an hour at the tree, but she was half way through. If she was quick, she could have her item finished in no time at all! It would take her all day, and probably some of the night too, but she wasn't one to stop what she had already started, and the item she wanted to create, she wanted it finished as soon as possible, just because she was who she was and for no other reason than wanting it.

Once again began hacking at the trunk of the tree once again. She would continue to do this until the trunk was almost cut completely through. As she brought her ax back and swung it forward once more, the tree began to fall and though there was no one around for it to fall on, she yelled, "TIMBER!!!" As the tree tilted and fell to the ground, she clapped her hands together and let out a long maniacal laugh. Yes, she had just cut down a giant tree! The wood should last a while, but now came the even worst part. She would have to cut it into bits, hack it up. She chewed on her lip and fell to her knees. "How did I not think about that..."

The Darker of Two Evils

Chop. Chop. Chop. HACK HACK HACK! It had been hours, literally hours since Lillian had begun chopping down the massive tree and then proceeded to hack it into little bits. She had managed five large pieces, two of which she needed, and seven smaller ones and she still had three quarters of the tree to go. She could have given up and waited until the next day, but she wouldn't give in. Who knew what would happen to it while she was asleep at the inn. Some other wood crafter could come and snag it, or some stupid animal could pee on it. She wanted her wood fresh and smelling of wood when she crafted her items. She still had a long way to go, but even if it took her all night, she would at least hack up the wood and stick the pieces in her inventory for later use. What would a wood crafter be without wood exactly? Though she didn't want to wait to build the item she so desperately wanted to, she would if it meant that she had a supply of wood to last her until, well, until whenever this game or whatever it was was. She continued to chop away, swinging er axe down hard into the truck, then once she had a fair sized chunk, she hacked away at that one until it was smaller pieces.

She took a deep breath and felt her bum plop down of the soft grass beneath her. She was soaked with sweat and felt parched. She felt her back hit the ground and she sighed. She should have brought some water, or some food, or something rather. Maybe she should go back to the Inn and rest. Right about now she couldn't even think about why she had even chosen to be a wood crafter in the first place. The work was long and it was hard on her body and she couldn't understand why she had thought she could do it. Then, her ultimate goal for this current project popped back into her head and she remembered why she had chosen this class over the tailor she had been thinking of. Her memory regained, she sat back up and then stood on her two feet. She felt the second wind come to her and she began to once again, hack away at the trunk. She had many pieces, enough to last her, well, at least her entire time in this game. She was exaggerating. If she was half as good as she expected herself to be, she would blow through the wood she had produced. Either way, the sun had gone down, but at least she had the provisions, plus a lot more, that she needed to start her project tomorrow. She didn't really want to wait, but it was dangerous in the dark, especially for the low level that she currently held. No, she had to wait until tomorrow, then the real project could begin.

As the morning sun shone in from the small window in her room, she opened her eyes, let out a long yawn and rolled over facing away from the sun. She wasn't ready to wake up, she didn't want to, so she shut her eyes and breathed heavily, lulling herself back to sleep. Except, it didn't work, within minutes she was throwing the comforter off of her and onto the floor, angrily flailing herself into a sitting position. "No! I'm not ready!" Mentally, she wasn't ready, she just wanted to sleep, but her body was regenerated and ready to go, wanting nothing more than to start the day. She grumbled as she threw her legs off of the bed and rose out of it, annoyed at the early rise. What time was it even? Was there even a time frame in this place? She didn't know, she just went to bed and woke up, and then whatever happened during the day was simply just filler. It didn't matter to her what happened, she really couldn't care, although, today she would be doing something that she did care about. She licked her lips and bent her neck to the left, it cracked, then to the right, another crack. She rotated her shoulders, stretching them out and then rose her arms above her head and stretched long. Okay, she was ready.

First, she needed to find a wood working station. She couldn't very well saw the wood, thin it out, sand it and shape it without the necessary tools, so she started off by hunting down a wood worker. She searched the town until she stumbled upon a tall, brute of a man, chopping at a large piece of wood. She tilted her head and walked up to him, her eyes scanning his station. "Hi there." She held out her hand in a greeting and smiled wide to him. He stopped working, standing tall, his brow quivering from what seemed to be agitation. "I was wondering if you would allow the to use your station. I don't have any where to work and I would be grateful for it!" She clapped her hands together in a plea and locked her eyes on his. He stood there, staring for a moment, then two, then three and huffed out a breath at her. She felt her curved lips straighten out and could tell he was about to tell her no. She put her hands to her sides and stood tall. "Listen, sir, I'm new around here and I just want to make my item, then I'll leave." Her voice became cold and she narrowed her eyes on him. He must have felt threatened by her because he smoothed out his features and backed away. "Yeah, whatever. Just be quick about it." He stalked off into his house and moments later, came out with a large bag and walked away, not even glancing at her. Her brow raised suspiciously, but she shrugged. The Landers clearly didn't like the adventurers presence here, but she didn't care, she had her station.

She took a few pieces of wood from her inventory and began chop away at the wood, making the long piece thin. She sanded the splinters out of it and then began to shape it, heating the wood on a small fire, until it was curved to the correct shape that she needed. She smiled at it, her work and glued the bottom together, setting it aside to begin the next portion of work. She took a thick chunk of wood next and split it in two pieces. She took the first piece over to the made part and drew the lines she needed. She took it back and began to cut at it, once again sanding it down, fitting it once more and then gluing it to the made piece. These next pieces really didn't need to be shaped at all, so it was easier than the last as that was the process that took the longest. She took the other half of the chunk of wood and did the same thing. Drew out the edges where she would need to cut but then took a different step and drew a circle a few inches from the middle of it. She checked the fitting again and then, after nodding to herself, began to cut out the shape she had made, as well as the hole. She sanded it down, made sure it was correct and then glued it in place. She smiled at how far she had come, looking at the product she had made, but a shuffle of dirt made her look up. The brutish man was back, and glaring down at her. "I want you to leave now. I have my own work to do and you are taking up my station. I don't really care what you have left to do or how long it will take or whatever you are going to say, just leave." Lillian stared up at the man, actually, it was more of a death glare and packed up her things. "Alright, alright. Thanks." Her voice was stern, and unappreciative. She had been so close, but now she would have to find somewhere else to go. She huffed at the man and walked away, not turning to look back either.
