The night had been long, and Vai could feel it. His eyes were still held closed as he pawed his way around. It was rare that he would open his eyes to see the mass amount of adventurers around him; the sudden influx of information seemed to overload his eyes, forcing him to immediately close them. Thankfully, the brief moments of having his eyes open allowed him to open them for longer intervals, and it allowed him to wander around. Now that it was so late, he could almost keep them open for five seconds before having to close them again. “This is so strange... I might never get used to being able to see.” A thought occured to him, perhaps he could find someone who would be able to help him out! But how would he do this? He churned and churned, what were those things he kept getting quests at in those rpgs... Maia called them notice boards, or quest boards. First things first, I need to find one! As Vai attempted his best way at crowd walking, accidently slamming into about five people who proceeded to yell at him about closing his eyes when moving. They didn’t understand, and Vai knew that, so he remained quiet and just apologized each time before continuing on. As he kept moving along the streets, the brief intervals of sight allowed him to notice one location had been receiving an unnatural amount of traffic, and upon closer inspection he noticed it was a huge board. Funnily, Vai had no idea how to read, so all he saw was paper upon paper upon paper. How do I even put a notice on this board? I can’t write, I can’t read. Perhaps I need to suck it up and ask someone to do it for me. He walked over to a random person in front of the board and went to tap them on the shoulder. Missing entirely, his arm fell down and whacked the person in front of him on the back of the elbow; it probably didn’t feel very pleasant. Realizing that he missed due to the feeling of accidentally hitting what is not a shoulder, he immediately opened his eyes. A woman stood before him, brown hair flowing for... he couldn’t measure it due to the headache returning. Best thing to do was apologize before the woman. “I-I’m sorry, that was not what I meant to do. Please forgive me, I need to ask a favor from you.” After saying this he paused, expecting the woman to decline as soon as possible. [attr="class","solcap"] Elkeid was back in London, with a few goals in mind. One of those included finding work, either as an Exorcist or Artisan. Her main class was already at a decently high level. Unlike most Adventurers she knew, Elkeid was not too interested in rushing towards max level. She was never a gamer to begin with, so all of this grinding did not sit well with her. Living a life similar to the one she had outside of this game world was all she desired. Something not as leisurely, of course.
The woman naturally gravitated towards the area of London where the quest and request boards were stationed. Adventurers rarely needed the assistance of an Exorcist, but Landers certainly did. Lander based quests were also sketchy, in general. Something about the People of the Land did not sit right with her. They often lacked in common sense, but at least they paid well, and sometimes their demands even had some interesting twists and turns.
She recalled the old haunted shack out in the Marshlands, where she had to put not only the restless spirits to rest, but also defeat the old woman responsible. It turned out that Elkeid had been tricked into cleaning up the mess the hag made… if you could even call murdering your family a mess. It was disrespectful in hindsight; Elkeid still saw the natives as computer generated beings, though lately she had warmed up to a few. That was mostly the doing of Sorrel, who pressured her into staying with an elderly Lander couple while they saved for a house of their own.
Her eyes narrowed as she allowed herself to reminisce, now standing in front of one of the boards. Minnie, the old wife, lent her sewing room to the Monk for work, and could cook exceptionally well. Were it not for her exercise regime, the Monk might have gotten a little thicker in the middle. Her husband was all right, too, though he took more of a shine to Sorrel, teaching the little werecat how to fish and what not. He also --
Elkeid tensed up as something -- someone, actually, whacked the back of her elbow. The woman whipped around, eyes narrowed for a different reason now. She regarded the young man with a cool gaze. The two of them were the same height, with Elkeid's obviously aided by her heels. She started to tell him off, but was thrown off by his shut eyes and nonaggressive manner. Plus, according to the system interface, he was only level one?
Once the man began to explain himself, her frosty exterior faltered. It was reduced to that chill in the air that heralded the coming of winter. There was no point in biting his head off over a harmless gesture. "You have my attention." Did he needed protection from the neighborhood bully? Or, god forbid, a mentor? Elkeid knew next to nothing about these two classes that had sprung up last year, though she could teach him a few of the basics. The confirmation to continue talking caused him to smile, perhaps he would be able to find help for his predicament! “Well, you see I have a problem... I can’t post to the board.” He sighed as he attempted to bring up his courage to explain the reason why he needed. Every adventurer here was a gamer of course, and almost none of them would probably be able to comprehend a blind man playing a game. Might as well try. “I can neither read nor write, and I am in search for someone to teach me how to see.” He opened his eyes barely as he said in an attempt to see the face of the woman he was talking to. Vai’s eyes moved straight toward the woman’s own eyes, before clamping his own shut. Whatever color that was, the few things he had seen in this world that related to what he had been told... well he had no answer for it, or why it was so appealing to him. “I mean, I can only keep them open for a very short amount of time.” He ended the sentence with a slight chuckle before clearing his throat in an attempt to not stray away from being serious. [attr="class","solcap"] The Monk raised an eyebrow at the grinning man. Why did she have a feeling that she would regret this later? He better not be looking for something a Courtesan would be better suited to supply… Elkeid found herself squinting as the man started. He couldn’t post to the board? What was he, blind? A fool? Or someone so lazy that they could afford to waste time by asking someone to do something that would take five seconds? Then again, he could be asking her to put down something suspicious, something he would not want traced back to him.
Her suspicions lessened as he finally explained himself, though she had a hard time believing it. Could not read or write? Was he actually blind? It would explain why he kept his eyes closed. It would also explain why, of what little she saw of his eyes, they were poorly focused. It would take a talented con man to fake blindness and trick Elkeid, who could tell a blind man from a seeing one.
As a child suffering from auditory agnosia, Elkeid had attended a support group for other children with hearing or vision impairments. One of the blind kids, a girl younger than Faustine, would cling to her arm and stay by her side. The older girl considered it to be a burden, but they eventually formed a beneficial relationship; Faustine would be their eyes, and the younger girl their ears. They fell out of touch as their therapy progressed, but that memory was one of the few from childhood she could recall.
Elkeid closed her eyes and pursed her lips. When she was first transported to this world, she had experienced something very similar to the man's predicament. Before, she could never comprehend sounds; bird song sounded like the harsh horn of a car to her, and so on and so forth. So being placed in a situation where she could begin to differentiate between the sources was devastating. It took a while for the noise to become ordinary for her, and even then she preferred to read lips when possible. It was easier to understand someone that way, rather than try to understand their broken Sim speak.
She reached up and pulled her pair of aviator goggles free from the top of her head. They were typically only worn as aesthetics, unless she was in combat; then they would be lowered over her eyes. This man could use them more than she could, however. "Here." She pressed the goggles into the man's hands. "Put these on for now. They are tinted like shades." That would make it easier on his poor eyes. "What do you need posted?" Vai had no idea what was going on, the sound of the city seemed to drown out any slight sound that would have alerted him to what the woman in front of him was doing. Suddenly, at least to him and not any of those around him would see as a surprise, he felt something being pressed into his hands. He was confused at first, as to what they were but alas, the woman spoke. She told him to put something on, but he had no idea what it was, forcing him to hold the goggles into the air, touching every piece of the goggles as he determined which part was what. “Ah, I see.” Vai blurted as he pulled the strap over his head and placed the goggles over his eyes. These weren't the first pair of goggles that he had ever held. At first, he had them upside down; which he promptly noticed by the pressure on his nose and removed them before rapidly placing them back on. Checking to make sure they were fastened properly, he opened his eyes. The world... it is so... what is the word, dark? I guess that would be what it is called. “Thank you, uh... whatever your name may be.” The words came out slowly as if he had been thinking on how to form his sentence. With the world dimmed around him his eyes seemed to properly adjust. Interesting, so this is what the world looks like. The man seemed to be entirely distracted for several seconds before finally coming to. “R-right. What I need posted, that is the wall right- WOW it looks so... is this paper!?” He hadn’t really given what the board was much thought, but he seemed to be ecstatic about the simplist things. “Ok so, I’m sorry this is all such a... this is text isn’t it?” He pointed to a bit of lettering that happened to say 'party of 5 wanted, hunting boars' but had no idea what it meant. “Alright sorry I’ll just, close my eyes for now.” He realized that he probably seemed like a nut at that moment, so as he said he closed his eyes. At least for now perhaps he could stay on task. “I was going to ask for assistance with my sight. I had no idea the person I was asking would think of this!” The man was grinning from ear to ear with happiness. “Of course I wouldn’t dare ask to keep these, I mean I know how expensive these- well at least they were in the real world. Where did you find them? By the way you can call me Matt." He gave the woman his real name, after all he had no idea that the game he had signed up for was now his reality. Vai was so stuck on this partial solution that he entirely forgot that he was still unable to see without them, causing him- at least in his mind, to think that the post wasn’t even required in the first place. [attr="class","solcap"] Watching the man fumble with the goggles may have been amusing to anyone else, but Elkeid was tempted to just take them and place them properly on his head. It was awkward and a little embarrassing; more for herself than him. The man… Vai? Could not see well enough to know that some people were gaping at him in open confusion. Elkeid glared back at them, causing one or two to look away in shame. As well as they should be.
She folded her arms across her chest as she watched the man finally succeed in the art of shades. "They call me Elkeid here," she corrected. She had long adjusted to the strange custom of adhering to an alias. Most gamers were the secretive sort, and would not divulge their real names. Elkeid only followed suit because she saw no reason to expose herself like that, if no one else was willing to do so. "You really are blind, hm?" The man seemed to be attempting to soak everything in, now that he was equipped with shades.
"Yes, that is paper." Her tone implied that she saw it as an everyday item, with little need for the amount of attention it was receiving. "...Oh, is that what you were after?" She supposed the request board could be used in this way. It was just… an unorthodox request? And how many people would be able to, or even want to help? "I could help you, in more ways than one." For starters, she could make him his own pair of shades. She could also attempt to teach him a few things about vision, as well. Elkeid was far from qualified from actually doing so, but her skills as an interior designer and Artisan would come in handy here.
A rare hint of a smile appeared on her countenance. "The goggles? I made those. We should probably start with color theory… Matt." When was the last time she had actually called someone by their birth name, and not their game handle? "You may call me Faustine." It was only the courteous thing to do. She clapped a hand on his shoulder. Maybe she could make him a cane, as well… "This way." Elkeid did not trust the man to not get lost in the crowd, so she held onto his shoulder as she led him towards the park. It would be less cluttered and quieter there. “You could help? Really? Thank you so much!” The man would almost have teared up, but he willed it away. He wasn’t about to cry in front of a crowd, let alone in front of a woman. She offered him her assistance, which he was grateful for but literally could not understand how she would help him. When Elkeid mentioned color, he started to understand. Color, like blue, green, and red; they were taught to him in kindergarten and middle school but he had always thought of them as concepts. Grass was always green, the sky was blue with clouds being white and the sun being yellow. As he thought about this he attempted to glance towards the sky, but the goggles limited his vision forcing him to tilt his head to look upwards. The sky were shades of dark colors which he could only expect to be blue. Elkeid’s voice caused him to focus back on her once more, and she mentioned another name for him to call her by. Faustine, interesting name really, then again both were extremely strange. Elkeid sounded straight from one of the RPGs that Maia always wanted him to play and Faustine, well it didn’t sound like it was from a game; unless it was the main villain. It started off rough and ended calm, reminded him of his own name, Matthias. Elkeid then planted a hand onto his shoulder, causing Vai to shrink down before recoiling back upward in surprise. Then she tugged on him and guided him through a large crowd. This sight was awe inspiring and far more terrifying than calm. The sight of being surrounded by several larger, smaller, different people all moving in different directions, or the same direction he can’t tell. It was utter chaos! Vai attempted to speak but his voice faltered, ending the sentence about as soon as it begun. “N-nice n...” He gulped. Not once in his life had he been scared enough that he couldn’t speak. Vai closed his eyes from the chaos, and took a moment to gather his wits. Despite all of this he was following close behind Elkeid with her instructions. Eventually the two of them were out of the crowd, and Vai attempted to repeat what he had wanted to say before. “Faustine, that’s a beautiful name. Why do people call you Elkeid though?” He had no idea what a username even was having never used one before. He tried answering this question in his head, and the first bit he tried to answer was ‘why Elk?’ Well he knew an Elk was a rather large deer, fantasy storybooks told him that much; as in literally told, audiobooks were wondrous inventions. Did that mean that she was tall? Well I suppose for a woman she is rather vertically graced, after all not many women were able to stand past his shoulders; even Maia was short. He couldn’t find an explanation as to where the -eid part came from her name. Maybe just a suffix to emphasize the Elk portion. He was sure to have his answer soon. [attr="class","solcap"] Elkeid felt her bosom swell with proud at the compliment of her name. Faustine was a good name; uncommon, but that was what she loved about it. Fortunate. Her godfather gave her the name upon adopting her, and his surname was just the icing on the cake: Faustine Drechsler, good luck turner. She was fortunate for surviving that brutal slaying of her parents, fortunate that the car jackers had paid her no mind. Her condition may have also served to save her life, since she surely would have cried otherwise.
They said that the heaviest coffin was the smallest.
"Thank you." As for why people called her Elkeid… "It is the game name I chose for my avatar." Had she known that she would actually be stuck here, she might have used a different name. "Elkeid is a star, also known as Alkaid or Benetnasch. It is the Eta Ursae Majoris, withun the constellation of the Ursa Major. That is the Big Dipper. It looks like a… ladle, if you have ever used one of those before." It was difficult explaining a constellation to a blind man. "I have an affinity for star naming themes." A low rumbling sounded from her throat. Was that a chuckle? "Many people do not know this, and mostly refer to me as Elk… like I am some kind of deer." There was no denying that she was tall, and taller still in heels.
Upon reaching the park, Elkeid guided the Warden to one of the benches. The park was thankfully free of clutter from the masses, and she could even hear a bit of birdsong nearby. From her inventory, she pulled out an easel and set it down on the ground. Next came a variety of paint, freshly crushed from an assortment of colorful bugs. "You should go star gazing, once you adjust to having vision. It was a favorite hobby of mine as a child." As she spoke, Elkeid dabbed at the stretch of canvas attached to the easel with her brush.
"I am like you, in a way. The problem was with my hearing, though. I could hear, but I could not comprehend… if that makes sense." In a world where everything sounded like nonsense, retreating to her hobbies kept her sane. She lacked in friends at that age, and being the only child on the premises at home, she had to keep herself occupied, one way or the other. One year, her godfather gifted her a telescope for Christmas. Young Faustine could not understand the point of it, but decided to humor the old man, anyway. He told her that as long as she had the stars, she would never be alone. It sounded foolish now that she thought about it, and may have been his way of keeping her busy, but it did spark an interest in astronomy within her.
She paused in the midst of filling a red lined circle. "Auditory Agnosia was my affliction." Was, and still is. While it was not as bad as it was since starting this game, Elkeid had moments where things got too disorienting. She had to sneak off to somewhere alone when that happened, preferably where sound was less distinct. The answer he recieved was a rather complicated one. Still though, it only garnered more respect from Vai as Elkeid seemed to have extensive knowledge on the night sky; knowledge he could have never obtained in the past. Finally the sound of massive amounts of footsteps dwindled to the sound of just two, his own and Elkeid’s. Opening his eyes finally he glanced around. It was a rather out of the way place, a park of some kind. He had wandered such places in the real world every so often, and even then he could feel the shift in atmosphere from the streets; that same atmosphere was here. Sitting down on the bench that he had been so kindly guided to, Vai began watching the actions of the brunette in front of him. He had never seen such a strange feat before, conjuring objects out of thin air? Unthinkable. A couple more objects were pulled from what seemed like thin air to Vai caused him to put his questions away for later, this was too intriguing to pass up. Then, she spoke. Star gazing huh? I’ve heard in the storybooks that the stars were beautiful, so perhaps I should try it sometime. The mention of the stars caused Vai to glance at the sky once more, that is where the stars would be right? Nothing dotted the sky at the current time, it was still too early in the day; although past lunch. The conversation seemed to continue on, and Elkeid mentioned her own plight. “I could sort of understand. I mean, when I first gained sight I was unable to understand my surroundings without closing my eyes first.” He closed his eyes for a brief moment, absorbing in the park in a way those who are used to sight are unable to, but brief it was as the voice of his tutor caused him to open his eyes once more. Elkeid had drawn a circle on the the easel in front of her, and Vai, seeing the color for the first time, seemed to be drawn more to the center of the circle than the rest of the paper. “Auditory Agnosia huh? I couldn’t imagine how inconvenient that probably was.” The words reminded Vai of his own predicament in the real world, where he was unable to see in the first place. That wasn’t too much of an inconvenience, after all he could still travel around the city, and do almost everything a man with sight could do except for read. “So, what color is that?” Vai was talking about the red on the canvas, but in the back of his mind he could already tell that it was probably red; the first color on the color wheel that was taught in school. [attr="class","solcap"] Elkeid shrugged her shoulders. "It was all I knew. I could still read lips and body language, so it was not all that bad. I imagine if I had been afflicted at a later age, rather than infancy, it would be difficult." There was always that nagging sensation that people were talking about her behind her back, but what could she do about that? Some even expressed pity to her right to her face, for missing out on things like music and simpler sounds, like the chirping of crickets. It was hard to know what you were missing out on, without prior experience. And now she had that, did she not?
Her hand paused as she pondered her future. Would she want to go back to a world where nothing made sense? How dulled would her senses be, in comparison to before she played the game? Elkeid sighed softly as she returned to filling in the red circle. She had to focus on teaching Matt / Vai. "Red. This is red, like the color of blood or firetrucks, or… Apples." Those were the best descriptors she could think of, ones that should be commonly known.
Her circle complete, Elk painted the word "red" beneath it. And now, for a bit of color theory. "Overall, red is the color of excitement. It is often associated with love, sexuality, violence, danger, anger, and the thrill of adventure. The color is everywhere on Valentine's Day, and is frequently seen on road signs like STOP. And then there are the people who claim to "see" red when they are angry." If this did not help Vai visualize the concept, she had no idea what would. Teaching color to a blind man was not something she did every day, after all.
While waiting on a response from her pupil, Elkeid dipped her brush into a small container of water. She would need it to be clean for the next color, which would likely be blue. Blue was very much the opposite of red in every way. Red could make people hungry, but blue, blue only served to calm. “Red. Huh, it’s quite beautiful.” the Warden said as he lifted the goggles away from his eyes to view the color un-dulled. It took his entire concentration to ignore every individual object within his vision, concentrating purely on the red. When Elkeid started describing what the color represented in depth, Vai’s eyes dashed to the first thing that moved; her lips. His eyes never reached their destination as he immediately clamped them shut from the sudden head-ache that ensued. His eyes were once again overloaded by the movement of the scene that was behind the Monk and her paint. “I don’t think I’ll ever get used to that,” he muttered before speaking aloud again. “I remember Maia kept trying to make me her valentine. I found it to be a tad pointless since I couldn’t read the card.” Although the last part of Elkeid description had struck him the wrong way. He had always assumed that red was a rough color, and one that could be associated to the darker emotions like anger and hate, but what he saw was a beautifully smooth color, how could it ever be construed for said emotions? “Well now I know what red looks like. What’s next on the wheel of color?” Thankfully he knew a bit of the wheel, but the colors in the center hadn’t really caught his attention as much as the first and the last, which red was the beginning and the end of the wheel he was taught in school. Vai had closed his eyes in thought while he waited for Elkeid to put another color on the board. As his mind wandered he wondered just why Maia had always tried making him her valentine, oh well he will never know. As far as he could understand, was that she wasn’t here in this world, and she was still back home. Words: 312 Tags: ElkeidNotes: ---

[attr="class","solcap"] "Maia, hm~?" Her eyes narrowed into thin slits, and the corners of her lips curled inwards. Instincts told her otherwise, but she could not help but ask: "Was she your lover?" That was Elk; straightforward as always. Some may have seen it as tactless, but if you are going to offer information like that unheeded, you had no one to blame but yourself. Elkeid rarely placed herself in those kinds of situations. She did value her privacy, after all.
Retaining the amused expression, Elkeid moved on to the next color: blue. "Next, I want to introduce you to the color blue." After shaking her brush free from moisture, the woman dipped it into the paint. A paint that was bluer than the sky on a clear day was added to the left of the red spot. "Blue can be described as the opposite of red. It has more of a calming effect on people, and can be seen as the level headed big brother to red. You can find it in the blue of the sky, blue jeans, and water, of course." Blue could also be used to describe depression, though she believed that was mostly a thing in American culture. Once that circle was explained, she would move on to the next color.
A bit of yellow joined the canvas. "Yellow is… Yellow stands for happiness, optimism, etc. If you want a good example of that that does not involve a really upbeat person, think of bananas, the sun, and school buses." She dropped her brush back into the water and leaned away from the easel, one hand resting on her hip. "And those are all the primary colors: red, blue and yellow. The secondary and extras after that are all made by combining the primaries. Any questions before we move on?" She hoped she was not overwhelming him with this information. “No, Maia was just a friend.” an extremely kind friend, but a friend nonetheless. That was all Vai said before Elkeid began with the lessons once more. She added another dot to the left of the red dot, this time it was an oddly soothing color. Vai could only agree as Elkeid described what in the real world was colored blue. “Yeah, it does remind me of the sky.” He looked up once more, three times in one day; he had never done that before. There were strange things forming in the sky, they were extremely pale in color but he could not put words to what it was. It was neither red, nor blue, nor brown, nor the color of Elkeid’s eyes. What was it? Turning his head towards the canvas caused him a bit of surprise. There was now a third color, and Elkeid had been describing it. He missed the actual name of the color, but thankfully the woman mentioned all three of the colors that they had just gone over. Using the process of elimination, he decided that the color she described was indeed, yellow. He had always remembered the day he wore a yellow shirt back in middle school; kids were evil back then and of course he was teased as the banana boy. Now he understood, bananas are yellow. “I do have a couple questions.” Vai looked straight at Elkeid, although he wasn’t sure if she could really tell with the googles on. “There are these strange things in the sky, what color are those?” He meant of course the clouds, but he had yet to realize that those were in fact clouds. In the real world, clouds garnered little to no attention from Vai, as the only time it ever affected him was when it rained or hailed. Being blind was pretty useful when the city was consumed by fog. “And the other question, is your hair, that is brown correct? The amalgamation of all colors?” He knew that brown was the color of mud and dirt, so he had some simple guesses as to what color Elkeid’s hair was. “With just those two questions, I’m all ready to move on. This seems fairly easy, although I was taught conceptualized colors in the real world.” Vai attempted to remove the goggles once more to get a better look at red and yellow, this time he managed to last exactly three seconds before putting the goggles back on. [attr="class","solcap"] Only a friend, eh? That made sense, she supposed. Many people were of the opinion that Valentine's Day also included platonic friends and family, so Maia may have very well been sincere in her efforts. Elkeid, on the other hand, was not so fortunate. Her godfather only bothered with the holiday for her when she was a child, by gifting her chocolate. In those days, no one sought to make her their Valentine, and she was all right with that.
The young Faustine could never fathom romantic emotions, so she did not fret as much as her peers over being alone or dateless. It became somewhat problematic as she grew older; peer pressure was a bitch. Whereas she was personally fine with being celibate, her classmates were more focused on sex and wanted her to loosen up a little. In their eyes, she was a fine cut of meat. Some even started giving her cards or asking her out around Valentines, just so they could dump her afterwards. High school was definitely not the place for a romantic holiday, and college was honestly no better.
The Monk snapped out of old, bitter memories when Vai spoke up. "Things?" She glanced up at the sky. Today was not a clear one, but also not stormy. It was simply a normal, cloudy day. "Ah. Those are clouds. They are white right now, but turn grey when it is about to rain. White is most often compared to purity, which is why the traditional wedding dress is white." She considered that ironic, actually. Were most people who got married even virgins? As an interior designer with many clients and connections, she had been to her fair share of weddings, and maybe only one or two of the women tying the knot were “pure“. What a joke.
"Yes, my hair color is brown." In terms of color comparisons, it did not have many favorable ones. Mud, dirt, feces… all of these were brown colors. Since he had accurately guessed the color, she did not feel it was necessary to elaborate further. "Time for secondary colors." This is where things would start to get tricky. Purple in particular would be an issue.
On the canvas, Elkeid painted a green circle, an orange one, and last but not least, purple. "Green represents health, and can be seen every in stores and restaurants that sell low calorie foods. This is what grass looks like." The last two colors would be trickier to explain. "Orange shares characteristics with red, in that it is vibrant and adventurous. You can experience it via the beauty of a setting or rising sun, and in the fruit, orange. As for purple…" What everyday item was purple? "Purple is magical, superstitious, mysterious… You can see it naturally in lightning storms, and maybe space." That was the best way she could describe the color purple, which was also a book title. Interesting way to put it, Vai thought about the fact that wedding dresses were white. I knew their color meant purity, but I hadn’t known that it was associated with anything else. Other things came to mind to describe white, blank was the most prominent one; like the canvas Elkeid had been painting on. It was a soothing color, and seemed to calm him down when he looked at it. “I find it to be beautiful. I always thought that brown would be an terrible color, but it’s not.” He chuckled a bit, most of what he knew about colors were what people told about him, and most were heavily biased against brown anything. They never mentioned brown hair. More colors were added to the canvas, this time they were the secondary colors of green, purple, and orange. Nodding as Elkeid described each colors representation in the world, he began to ask questions himself. Why was green always associated with good food, and good things in general? Why did the sun go from a blinding yellow-ish white to a deep orange? Why was purple so strange? I had always heard that it was a royal color, rather than mystery. He was sure that Elk was telling what she knew and that he would still benefit from it. “That color there, green. It is the same as your eyes... no?” Vai had noticed this trait awhile back and had tried to think of what color it must have been, but looking at green for such a long time he put two and two together and made fish. “Guess that must mean you have healthy eyes. Tell me, what are mine? I can’t exactly see them, and nobody has ever told me their color before. Guess they figured it was useless information to one without sight.” He chuckled at the last comment, although it hurt him inside. Back in the real world he was left out of many, many good times among friends in highschool; despite being so popular himself. Perhaps it was because he was blind that everyone seemed to get along with him; he couldn’t see their faces when among them so for all he knew, they were making fun of him. His face seemed to change as he thought about this, but it didn’t last long as the thought was purged from his mind. His friends were his friends, none of them would have acted like that. [attr="class","solcap"] It was reassuring to hear that Vai thought of brown as a beautiful color. It would be horrible to learn that her hair resembled a giant pile of feces. She self-consciously brushed it back with one hand now. Her hair was just one of the features she could be vain about. She would not go so far as to say it was her pride and joy; those were obviously her eyes. Elk had been told a few times that she had the physique and beauty to be a model, but it was hard to take brownnosers seriously, and she could not imagine she had the temperament for such a lifestyle. Designing was actually less stressful. The fear of being traded off for a younger and prettier model simply did not exist.
She unintentionally flipped her hair when the man pointed out the green of her eyes. "Indeed it is." Another smile briefly flickered across her face. It was a very rare sight for someone who was more accustomed to frowning or deadpanning. Perhaps loneliness really had gotten the best of her. "I do eat healthily, so in my case..." There was a twinkle in her eye. "You are what you eat."
It occurred to her that she may have (no, scratch that, did) made a euphemism, but the conversation was continuing without a hitch. "As for you..." Elkeid stalked closer to peek into his eyes, hands resting on her knees as she leaned over. "They are a dark shade of green. Someone has been eating well." She stopped herself before she could brush his bangs aside. Shame no one had bothered to tell him until now.
The woman took a seat beside him on the bench. There was not much to teach about colors, and he seemed to have a decent grasp of their concepts already. What else was there for her to explain? "That is the problem with people who were born with all five of their senses intact. They take things for granted or cannot be bothered to sympathize." on more than one occasion, classmates and people later in life confused her auditory agnosia with deafness, and would blast their obnoxious music or chat incessantly about their trivial problems in her vicinity. They could not wrap their simple minds around her agnosia, nor did they realize how much she appreciated silence. "That is one thing I do not miss." “You think?” Vai wondered aloud at what Elkeid had mentioned about eating well. Perhaps it were true, he was eating fairly well in the real world; people must have freaked out when the blind man was cooking for himself. It allowed him to be more selective of his foods. Rather than the food looking good to him, he would focus on the scent and flavor, so he always had tasty food to eat; don’t think they were probably good for me though. “Perhaps what I ate really was good for me.” He wondered aloud, putting a thumb on his chin. It was then, that Elkeid started talking about those who were ignorant thanks to their birthright of five senses. “I guess I am lucky to have known my friends. They seemed so caring at all times. Perhaps I do miss them.” Sighing, Vai continued, “But I do not miss being blind. I mean, I can just return to that life if I so desire by simply closing my eyes.” As he said this his eyes clamped shut, turning the world black on himself. It didn’t seem right already, having his eyes shut for so long, he almost felt like he had to re-open them. It might have just been the fact that the park was beautiful and he was just learning colors and the like, but he held his eyes shut for several seconds before leaning back, moving the goggles up on his head and opening them. “Although it does feel strange reopening my ey-AGH” He closed his eyes and covered them with his hands as he sat up. “Ow-ow-ow why is yellow so painful!” He had opened his eyes and watched the clouds above as he was talking, and the sun had peeked itself from around the cloud he was staring at, causing surprising pain from looking directly at it. Rubbing his eyes instinctively before putting the goggles back on, he opened his eyes once more to see Elkeid’s reaction, or well he would but he couldn’t see her face. There was this strange blotch in his vision, it was blue... no purple... no orange... no black... what color was this! “Faustine, why is your face gone, it’s all these colors but I can’t tell. What is happening?” He attempted to stay calm in the situation, but in his mind he was freaking out, and his tensed body might give away the same notion. [attr="class","solcap"] Elkeid considered herself lucky to be only out of touch with one of her senses. She could not fathom being unable to see, for her work required her to have an eye for design and the like. How could she design something if she did not know what her materials or the environment looked like? Colors were a highly important factor to consider, as well. You could probably get by in everyday life by knowing what objects the colors were associated with, but… Interior Design required so much more of a person. She supposed she could do with not being able to see what her food looked like. As long as someone was not cruel enough to trick her, anyway.
Ah, friends. She lightly closed her eyes in reminiscence. "I certainly miss mine. And bar hopping." Oh, how she missed exploring different bars, and getting shitfaced with the university students. She never went home with any of them, of course, or anyone in general. Her interest in sex outside of a relationship was nil, and one night stands were just trashy. It made some of her friends trashy by default, and she was not sorry to think so or afraid to say it to their faces. They would just laugh and call her a prude, as usual.
"Ah!" The sudden outburst from Vai startled her, and for a moment she was confused as to what the problem was. Was it overstimulation from the colors? Actually, that was partially correct. The poor fool had been gazing at the sun, which he referred to as yellow. She gave a light shake of her head before clapping the man on the shoulder. "Never stare up at the sun. You can lose your sight if done for too long. It is why some wear shades, to protect from the glare." When she began to rub his shoulder, it was in a much gentler matter than the slap. She could tell that he was trying to remain calm, but his body language was betraying him. "Just relax. It will go away soon enough." "I... I don't understand. My vision, whatever that thing is... it hurts. God my head hurts." He closed his eyes inside the goggles, but the blotch in his vision stayed, it's colors shifting and turning unnaturally. "Relax, if only that were so easy." He tried to focus on anything else to ignore the blotch. Elkeid's hand on his shoulder, the birds twittering away in the trees, the wind blowing across his face. Nothing was a good enough distraction from the subtle light show going on in the center of his vision. As the colors changed, he saw different shapes; if he were superstitious he might have perceived them as sights of the future as occasionally the shapes resembled people. A thought came to his head, perhaps he should try to see the world around him as a distraction. Removing the goggles it was revealed that his eyes were closed, but he slowly opened them to take in the world around. Whatever he looked at, he could not see as the blackish randomly colored blotch kept him from seeing it. "Why won't it just end... this is literal torture." Thankfully, he found an object large enough that it was larger than the spot he could not see. A bush, across the way from them. It was green, of course, and a bit dark in color. He began trying to count the leaves, but by the time he was able to reach ten, his vision started returning. The headache felt absolutely terrible, but as the sunspot left, as did the headache. "I've... never quite had a headache like that before." He sighed, holding his head and putting the goggles back over his eyes. "Just what was that, Faustine? Is that normal?" He looked up at her through the goggles, and gave a sigh of relief when he was able to see her green eyes. His mind had many questions, but he avoided asking them. He had asked enough of his tutor, and was sure that perhaps he could figure out the rest on his own. Words: 343 Tags: Elkeid Notes: Apparantly I had this entire thing written out... if you want me to rewrite it in a better way, I should be able to.
