By her seventh day in this world, the sixth after the Catastrophe, Adler had a revelation involving the muscle memories within their avatars’ bodies. While fighting against monsters within the Windsor Greatwood, a reflex jerk of her shield arm turned out to be an effective block against the incoming attack. It wasn’t just that she had gotten lucky, but the movement itself surprised her once she realized what had happened. Before they woke up in this world (an unofficial guild had took it upon themselves to find out more about their situation; it was concluded that everyone had blacked out prior to finding themselves in a strange place), the closest thing Isabella Rose had to fighting experience was flailing and slapping at her coworkers hands, and maybe poking each other with cheap brushes and throwing pieces of rubber from across the room. Right then however, the movement involving her buckler was instinctive and unbelievably natural. She hadn’t felt at ease with the battle system before then—maybe it was because in the beginning she, like other people, felt lost, or maybe it was just because she was too nervous about dying—who could say? Whatever the reason however, she now found herself feeling like she could actually be good at this, and that feeling made her want to take some risks.

After a quick round of killing monsters less than half her current level, Adler decided to venture deeper into the woods. It was early in the morning, probably around eight; bright but cool rays of sunlight filtered through the trees and hit everything at an angle, emphasizing the fact. Her confidence wouldn’t last long though.

As a level eleven Guardian, monsters in the six to ten range were easier to kill than when she had been level six. It was easier, but not effortless. There were a lot of reasons for it—an increase in base stats from leveling up was the most obvious. Confidence and experience were the next—the monsters didn't learn from their fallen kin and thus acted with the same instincts and strategies, allowing players infinite time to experiment and devise tricks on how best to overcome them. More kills meant success, and success usually got to one's head. There were many other players who had already explored these parts, and some of them made the monster information available to anyone who made the effort to ask for it. Ironically, what was meant to keep everyone safe and on their guard only made them more reckless.

What people could never make clear on paper was how suddenly monsters could be upon you, or how you lose your wits at the first sign of danger, unexpected or not.

Rustling and grunting in the bushes nearby made Adler face the noise and assume a battle stance by reflex. Something was off about the grunting, however. The leaves began shaking more violently—whatever was inside was about to come out. Adler tightened her grip on her buckler and kunai, but instead of a monster, a human in leather armor tumbled out

“Finally!” he exhaled, dusting himself off as he got up. Adler cleared her throat, causing the brunette to spin around and face her.

“Who are you?” They both said simultaneously.

“Passerby.” Adler offered reluctantly. Names weren't really a secret in a world of information windows, so they had both meant something different.

“Got trapped in a vine. Don't ask.” he said, to which she shrugged. Adler stood still while he straightened himself out—to do otherwise would imply unsavory intentions, and it looked like the level fifteen Swashbuckler Robert Barrel Jones IV could hold his own in a fight against a comparable Guardian, let alone her.

“May I at least ask if I should beware a monster with vines?” she attempted. He smiled wryly. “You should. Brier Weasels and Nepent Snatchers start spawning from here on out. I’ll tell you a secret though. The Nepent Snatchers actually—“

“Noooooooo!” Someone wailed from up ahead. Their heads turned, searching for the source. Adler took a step back, but Robert dashed ahead to help. Feeling ashamed, she ran after him.

“This way!” He called without looking back.

The sound of their heavy breathing was all she could hear over the rustle of leaves they disturbed while running past. They reached a break in the undergrowth just as a second wail sounded out.

Several large plants with leaves or flowers—she wasn’t a botanist; she couldn’t tell—in the shape of a pitcher had a player surrounded. Adler focused on their heads and was shocked to discover a second player within one of the monsters.

“Fold Step!” He declared, shooting forward like an arrow. Adler shadowed his footsteps. She was ten feet away when the level eight Nepent made to move in on the Elven Cleric. Adler threw her kunai at the plant monster, and the metal embedded itself into the vine that was to strike at the healer—a lucky shot. The Swashbuckler maintained his trajectory and attacked the level six Nepent at the same time. Both Nepents made a sound that reminded Adler of giant insects; Adler gripped the rope that trailed behind the kunai and pulled to retrieve her weapon before the monster could yank it out of reach, and Robert sheathed his second blade and grabbed onto the foot that had suddenly popped out of the dying Nepent’s mouth.

“Oh God oh God oh God,” The cleric moaned, folding in on herself. “I don’t want to die!” Her hysteria was contagious; Adler felt uneasy, standing her ground beneath the two monsters and the girl whimpering behind her. She slashed at the level ten Nepent to her left when it tried to attack them, though the level eight one struck her while she was distracted.

“Get a grip!” Robert yelled, dragging Rowan over to her. The player was disoriented and obviously in shock; he wouldn’t be any use to them for this fight. Though he was talking to Alyanna, Adler was heartened by his confidence. She glanced behind her and, seeing the Swashbuckler was closer to the level eight Nepent, charged towards the level ten.

“Ha!” She roared, throwing her kunai at the plant. When it made contact and triggered another insect-like cry, she swiftly pulled the weapon back to her and stabbed the Nepent in the bud. Meanwhile, Robert had pulled out his second sword again and engaged the remaining Nepent. “Mirage Dealer!” He slashed at it with both blades at one, leaving a cross shaped mark where the monster was cut. A second later, he disappeared. The monster let out one last shriek before it crumpled to a heap, revealing where the Swashbuckler had gone.

“Party!” Alyanna called out. A window popped out for Adler's approval. As she was still fighting the Nepent, it took a few tries for her to accept the invitation without using her fingers.

“Saint Channeling!” A sensation similar to Adler’s own Cool Defense pulsed from her muscles outward, settling on her skin. She sneaked a glance at her health bar and found that she had recovered a small amount. It seemed Alyanna had recovered her wits after all.

Level ten didn’t like it of course. With its insect-like call, it made to move around Adler to get to the Elf. ‘Oh no you don’t!’ She wheeled around and stomped one foot against the ground, willing the monster to be rooted to the spot. “Heavy Anchor!” A bright blue stripe of light only she could see streaked through the grass from her foot to the Nepent Snatcher’s roots. It fell forward slightly as it was forcibly immobilized. Robert finished off the enemy without difficulty, and Adler felt the pressure on her feet evaporate as the monster crumpled and died.

“Good job.” He smiled, showing a lovely set of teeth. Adler blushed. They both looked toward the Cleric and Guardian duo. The Guardian, she was surprised to see, had almost half of his health back.

“We were just fighting this one Nepent.” Rowan explained while Alyanna finished healing him to full health. “Then when it went after Alyanna, I used Anchor Howl and...”

“It affected the other Nepents in range.” Robert guessed. A plopping sound drew Adler’s attention. She turned her head to look around them, which Robert noticed and copied. “What’s wrong?”

“Do you hear…?” Plop plop plop. It wasn’t three plopping sounds in succession as it was multiple ploppers plopping together. Everyone except Alyanna readied their weapons. From the bushes all around them came a wave of Green Slimes. There must have been—

“Twelve.” Robert announced calmly but directly. “Four for each of us, leaving Alyanna free to heal. Try not to use skills, it’ll attract more of them.” “Okay.” “Copy that.”

They spread out around Alyanna, though she was holding her staff to defend herself if any of them managed to reach her. Though she had stopped casting Saint Channeling, the Slimes were moving in fast.

Adler took advantage of her kunai’s range to quickly get four of the Slimes attention on her. She utilized the same throw and retrieve tactic from earlier and inflicted minor damage to each monster, earning their aggro. These healthy Slimes bounced higher than their lower levelled Dull cousins, making it easier for her to reach them when she finally shifted to close-range fighting. Plop. Alder used her buckler like a blunt weapon and clouted the Slimes from above, alternately stabbing those that get too close before she could bring he shield back around quickly enough. She attacked randomly at first, though at fifty percent health, she realized she should’ve focused on them one at a time to lessen the damage in the long run.

“Heavy Anchor!” She yelled, freezing the Slime that was farthest away from her. She would have preferred using Cool Defense, but a continuous MP drain would probably draw in more Slimes—precisely what Robert warned them against. She focused on the first Slime and downed it within seconds.

“Hang in there Adler! Rowen, I’m coming over there!” It seemed Robert had finished his four. “Reactive Heal!” Adler felt it; a warmth settled on her skin immediately after the incantation. Adler fended off the remaining two Slimes, splitting her attention between them to lessen their damage on her. She wasn’t going to last long if she focused on only one and ignored the other again.

Alyanna’s healing spell took effect the first time she failed to block an attack following the spell, restoring health back to greater than what it was just before it. Adler took advantage of the breathing room by focusing on the second Slime, killing it quickly. Now it was down to the last two, with one that was just out of reach and thus unable to do anything. Her only problem was that this one still had a considerable amount of health, while Adler’s was dwindling.

“I’ve got it!” Rowan yelled, swooping in and cleaving the Slime in two with his long sword. The split blobs fused back together as soon as the blade passed through, but its health took a big hit. He must have had good armor if his damage beat hers. He defeated the blob with another swing, but Robert beat him to the other one.

When the Slime threat had been put down, the group moved to a more inconspicuous location and settled down to recover. Adler's Resilience skill kicked in not long after the fight and had an immediately noticable effect while she watched.

“Well done. Not bad for a pick up group.” Robert said cheerfully, one leg folded under him while the other was bent parallel to his spine. A fatigued Alyanna set quietly beside Rowan, who lay in the grass sprawled out and relaxed. Adler herself sat cross legged as the third point of their misshapen triangle between the men, feeling tired but alert.

“Yeah.” she said, just to avoid a lull.

“So what are you lot going to do now?”

“Hunt Pittered Boar.” She replied, citing her original reason for delving deep into the Greatwood in the first place. “I want to try making something from their tusks. You don't happen to know if they're ivory, do you?”

“You're an Artisan!” He exclaimed. She inclined her head, acknowledging his guess.

“Arent elephant tusks ivory?” Rowan pointed out.

“Yeah, that's why I was hoping...”

“I don't think boar tusks are the same though.” Alyanna mused. “We'd have heard about boar hunting back in the real world, wouldn't we?”

“Guess so.” Robert said lightly, a sad look coming over his face. “What about you two?”

“We wanted to keep training.” Alyanna said timidly. “I need to catch up to Rowan.”

“What about you?” Adler asked at the same time Robert suggested, “Why don't you three just go together?”

“Ah, well.” Robert began, looking apologetic while the other two looked at each other and had a psychic conversation. “I'm off to meet some friends at the swamp. Stronger monsters.” Adler nodded.

“Adler can tag along with us.” Rowan announced. Robert laughed.

“That's great. Keep each other alive okay?”

“How can you still have your starter equipment?” Rowen exclaimed again, not really expecting an answer. It was now the fourth time he had said so since they parted ways with Robert the Swashbuckler and decided to do a little strategizing. Alyanna and Rowen were decently equipped with their lowest ranking armor at level five, but Adler still had all of the gear she had started the game with. She could almost see the gears in their heads turning as they reevaluated her value as a party member. At level eleven, Adler had higher base stats than Alyanna, but they were noticeably lower than Rowen’s whose race didn’t limit his HP growth. When their gear was taken into consideration, the gap between the two guardians was even wider. Her higher level might also frighten off lower levelled monsters that would’ve been more ideal for them to practice on.

“Why didn’t you buy from the market?” He said again. Adler had had enough.

“You know what?” She started angrily, rising to her full height. Rowen was only slightly shorter than her, but was just as muscular. He was obviously a child. Perhaps not literally (she had him pegged at sixteen years old), but he was doing a fine job acting like one. Robert had clearly been his superior and he had said nothing bad then, but now that Adler was beginning to look like she was a mediocre player who just happened to be there when his life was saved, it seemed Rowen’s petulance had been bottled up long enough. She knew the type—kids who thought they were all-knowing and were unbeatable and were very good at denying all of the times they had made a mistake, trivial or not. It was during times like these that Isabella felt so blessed to be an only child—the most annoying person in the room was usually her.

“I’m out. We’re wasting time, and I’d like to get those tusks before I die from your sermons.” The guardians glared at each other. Tactically, it was a mistake for Adler to have let her emotions run away with her. Rowen and Alyanna were in an excellent position to kill her and be done with the drama. Fortunately for her, the cleric wasn’t as vengeful.

“Take care then. Good luck with your collecting.” She said mildly, flashing Adler a demure smile. Rowen glowered at her, but Adler pretended he ceased to exist. “You too. Be safe.” The two had another psychic conversation, during which Adler slipped away.

After parting ways with Eadon the Sorceous Blacksmith, Adler decided to hang around in St. Pancras Station for a bit. The afternoon had passed by quickly and night had fallen over London, but she knew as well as anybody that heading out to the Greatwood at night was an unnecessary risk. It also seemed too late to contact Indy now; better to leave that for the morning when minds were less sleepy and plans were more open.

Instead, Adler wandered the streets, searching for goods and information. As had become her style, she would do the latter secretly, under the pretense of finding a good bargain or hunting for a rare item. If by chance she found herself in a situation where she could talk freely with a Person of the Land without other Adventurers listening in however, she wouldn't hold back. Such a scene happened not thirty minutes after she began skulking around the stalls, examining trinkets and vanity items far too intently for anyone to be fooled into thinking she was actually interested in buying something.

“Hey lady, if you aren’t going to buy something, get lost!” A young male Lander of around ten scolded her.

“Toddi, that isn’t very nice!” The young girl standing beside him said. She said his name in a way that made it sound like his name was “Toad-E”, and Adler privately agreed. Smooth skin, wide eyes, a twitchy demeanor coupled with a facial expression that made it look like he was just waiting for something to dare to come near enough for his tongue to snatch it up.

“But she’s been looking at that bone pin for forever!” He shot right back. “How do we know she isn’t planning on stealing it, eh?” Bone? Adler actually looked at the thing in her hand this time. It was light brown in color, resembling wood even down to the visible grain. However, the smoothness was something unachievable in wood without a varnish of some sort. “Dad hasn’t been able to make any more since it’s getting harder to—“

“Is your father an artisan?” She asked, interrupting Toddi’s rant. “Yeah, what’s it to you?” “I think she’s trying to help.” The girl said to placate him. “Is Tadda right? Are you?” Adler considered. She hadn’t heard of people getting quests since the Catastrophe, but this sounded a lot like one.

“Well?”

“What kind of bones does he need?” She asked finally, placing the accessory back on the table to pick up a small brooch that seemed to be made of ivory.

“He preferred the thigh bones from cows, but he accepted deer or boar back when the Adventurers...” Tadda trailed off. ‘Back when we did quests on a regular basis.’ Adler completed in her head. It made sense. The player crafters were used to buying their own materials, but NPCs used to outsource it to them all the time, with experience, gold, or potions as a reward.

“Don’t forget boar tusks.” Toddi added, oblivious to Tadda’s death glare. “Ivory, you know.”

“Alright.” Adler put the brooch back as well. “Can I talk to your father?” How great would it be if she went through all that trouble and the NPC she wanted to go on a quest for rejected her gifts?

The kids told her to wait or come back in an hour when their father will have returned with some food. She chose to wander around while waiting, realizing she hadn’t eaten anything yet either. Though she still had a bit of time after she finished, Adler retraced her steps to the stall and saw that the man she was looking for had returned early. They were talking amongst themselves, the kids looking very happy as they told stories of what happened while he was gone. When Teddi happened to look up and meet Adler’s eyes however, he didn’t look away. Noticing this, Toddi and Tadda followed his gaze and saw what he did. Adler, who earlier had been keeping some distance between them, now approached.

“You must be the Adventurer my kids told me about.” Adler nodded.

“They said you needed bones.”

“And they said you wanted to help.” Adler snuck a glance at Tadda, but she no longer seemed as squeamish as she did earlier. Toddi continued munching on a candied apple.

“Yes.”

“We are grateful.” His tone and answer surprised her. “Is something the matter?”

“No, nothing. I was just surprised.”

“I would be grateful for as many as you can get me.” He continued, taking her word for it and dropping his line of questioning. “Cow’s shank bones, deer antlers, and boar tusks are all valuable. Any bone is useful, but those three are the best materials locally.”

“I want something in return.” Adler interrupted. Toddi looked outraged, but Teddi only nodded, expecting this.

“I don’t have much gold but—“

“I don’t want gold. I want you to teach me how to carve.” Teddi looked surprised, but his expression eventually shifted to being pleased.

“Is that all?”

“Yes.”

“We have a deal then. Try to get around twenty good pieces.” He grinned, and Adler reciprocated. They shook hands to seal the deal, and Adler bid them good night.

Adler went to bed with the sole plan of spending the next day collecting bones and tusks from anywhere she could. After she woke up and was getting dressed however, she remembered her promise to Eadon and instead arranged a meeting with Indy. The Guardian didn’t get around to starting on her quest until a few days later, when looking at a vaguely tooth-shaped rock on her floor prompted her to remember.

Adler woke up just in time for lunch, though she wasn’t hungry so she went straight to business. Her first stop was to the local butcher. She had (naively) hoped that they would be throwing the bones out or selling them cheap, but it hadn’t occurred to her before talking to them that bones were good for making soup and were sometimes ground up for fertilizer.

The only thrifty alternative left was to hunt own monsters, though fortunately for her, she had a few to choose from. Deer inhabited the same areas as boars, but were much too quick for her to hunt down unless she exerted a lot of effort into staying downwind until the last second, when she could use Heavy Anchor to keep them still for her to kill. More convenient for her were Pittered Boars, the only monsters in the nearby area with a conventional skeleton big enough for her purposes. Goblins in the Marshlands could be found in more concentrated in numbers, but that would have been a more suitable tactic for a party that could take them out considerably faster than a lone melee Guardian.

It would have been more impressive if Adler could’ve said something cool and intimidating about the beasts, like, they were big, they were bad, and they were hungry. Instead, she was stuck with, they were medium, they were unimpressed, but she supposed they were at least hairy. Since she was about twice the level of the strongest monster around however, everything gave her a wide berth. It wasn’t deliberate; they didn’t take one look at her and walk sideways to get away from her sooner like she had the plague or something, but it was like she had a force field that told them to move a bit further left or keep going forward, but change your direction a smidge. It was helpful in that she didn’t have to worry about accidentally hitting something else with an area skill at least.

Adler adjusted her grips on her war hammer and shield to focus on the latter. “SHIELD SMASH!” Adler’s one pre-emptive offensive skill predictably involved bashing her shield into someone or something like a caveman. She followed it up with a regular skull bashing before hefting her weapon to deliver another powerful blow to the beast’s head. The Pittered Boar collapsed as it died. Realizing something, Adler’s frowned. She assumed the bones would be dropped like normal, but was she supposed to dismantle the carcass herself? It wasn’t in her skillset. She could probably figure out how to carve a chicken or debone a fish, but that was it. Should she thus (1) bring the pig in its entirety back, (2) figure it out and cut the bones out herself, (3) find someone to teach her how to do it before anything else, or (4) keep fighting until enough bones dropped?

The second option appealed to her the least, so it was crossed off the list as soon as she finished thinking about her options. The first was tempting, but monsters disappeared after a period of time, and she didn’t think Teddi was any more willing to remove the bones from a dead animal than she was. Options three and four weren’t much more of a guarantee, and all three would take up quite a bit of time getting from one place to another alone. After thinking things through for five minutes, Adler settled on the fourth and returned to killing monsters.

“SHIELD SMASH!” Adler clearly needed a new skill. Anchor Howl seemed incredibly useful for Guardians who were strong enough to handle multiple enemies at once. The only reason she hadn’t gotten it already was because she was training for a dungeon run and she didn’t think it would do her any favors if it had already been agreed upon that Weegee (one of her guildmates, and a Monk) would be the primary tank anyway. The bone drops Adler received from killing and looting things the normal way seemed of good quality, if only a bit small. Boar tusks were rarer; they only seemed to be dropped by the males (or whichever gender had the larger ones) of their species. As she didn’t know of any other monsters she could hunt down if she wanted larger bones to turn over however, Adler didn’t have much choice in the matter.

Adler, being the unpredictable creative type that she was, started to wonder. If she couldn't get what she needed from monsters... There were other things she could hunt down for sport.

Animals weren't included in the official bestiary because they were too ordinary to waste space on. Creatures like deer and birds and rats and fish, and who knows what else. While it was never made clear (to her at least) what made some mutate or evolve differently, the main difference was obvious; anything that didn't exist in the real world were classified as "monsters", and thus, were more dangerous and unpredictable than those they called "animals". ‘So if I can't find the bones of a tamed cow...

‘Brilliant, Adler.’

Though now the question was, were there even bison in the forests around London? Probably not, but what did she know, she wasn't a wildlife expert. Being granted the title of "Adventurer" made her feel like she should exert more effort to live up to the name however, and choosing to run around looking for something that may or may not exist sounded like a fine endeavor to take on. What kind of Adventurer busied himself killing weak monsters less than half his level? 'Not one worthy of the name', she told herself. A big animal like a bison was sure to have enough bones to suit Teddi's needs. She would just have to capture one and get it to the nearest butcher or taxidermist and trade the meat and skin for bones.

Adler set off, ignoring everything she came across unless it was unwise to do so. She didn’t recall a specific number to the weight limit for a Bag of Holding, but just to be on the safe side, she wasn’t going to waste her time and energy killing monsters only to have to drop everything she’d looted when it turns out that a bison couldn’t fit anymore. Her health and mana bars slowly filled up as she explored the wood. There were birds and squirrels flying and leaping from branch to branch, while the calls of other unseen animals kept the Windsor Greatwood from being too quiet.

If Adler was right, then she needed to find a place where flowing water cut through a plain where large plant-eating animals would roam. Forests seemed to be more suitable to packs of wolves and bears, though she hadn’t heard any talk about either of the two yet. She was keeping track of the distance she’d already travelled by making knots on a piece of twine, one for every fifty meters that she’d already passed. It was a naïve way of determining how much farther she’d have to travel before getting back to town. Purchasing a map had always been an option of course, but for some reason, Adler rejected the idea. It was probably because, as an Artisan, she’d always resented Scribes for their way with maps and ink. Adler could make maps! They’d be much more colorful and detailed than a regular map that a Scribe produced. Was there something she could craft in cooperation with one?

The sound of wood cracking brought her up short. It had been just loud enough to break through her reverie, but too quiet for her to have been sure where it came from. Adler readied her war hammer and shield and adopted a defensive stance as she looked around for the source.

“Who’s out there?” She called out rather stupidly. After a moment, Adler approached a sizeable tree trunk, intending to use it as cover and keep her back protected. As she neared it however, a growl-like moan from a large animal sounded from the branches of the tree, and Adler took a step back. Whatever it was moaned again, and Adler’s first thought was that it was a bear. She couldn’t imagine anything else making that noise, except probably a moose, but as far as she knew, mooses didn’t climb trees. Curious, Adler circled around to try and get a better look at whatever was up there.

“What are you…?” She said, talking to herself. There was something dark-colored up in the branches alright, but all she could make out was that it was a huge thing with fur. A bear was probably the right guess, but what was it doing up there?

It moaned again, making Adler jump. Another moan from a different direction and closer to the ground sent Adler whirling. Two bears? She didn’t know if they usually travelled in packs. In the movies, they were always alone or with their family—

Both bears moaned, calling to each other. Adler started hyperventilating.

Adler ran. Despite having lived in this alternate world for weeks now, there was no way her instinct to flee from very real and very dangerous animals was going to go away with a few levels.

Naturally, what else was supposed to happen to our fleeing protagonist? Why, run straight into a third bear of course!

Adler and the bear collided head on, with both parties getting knocked away from each other in a daze. They both scrambled upright, and the bear roared at her. Not a traditional roar from a big cat of course. The sound was like a wheezing roar that pulsed, like an extremely agitated food processor whose breath blew the hair away from your face. Coming from an adult-sized bear, she wouldn’t have been surprised if she was literally blown away.

“Heee!” ‘What were people supposed to do in situations like this? Stop, drop, and roll?’

The bear charged at her, but stopped abruptly, like a bluff. Adler flinched. Go away, it seemed to say. The Guardian wasn’t in the mood to remember that large animals were more than ferocious creatures out to get people though. Of course Adler tightened her grip on her shield and war hammer. Of course the bear would feel even more threatened.

‘I am NOT playing dead!’

The bear roared again, in that pulsing blender kind of way.

“HA! Leave me alone, you stupid bear!” She cried. The bear, feeling threatened but not outmatched, charged at her.

“No! Uh, uh, HEAVY ANCHOR!”
