It had been awhile since Vai had learned how to use his longbow, now it was time for him to actually see how well he could use it. From self testing, he knew he could target enemies and ‘select’ things from what looked like a bar with icons on it, and the system seemed a tad clunky but it was the best he could do for the time being. Targeting a training dummy somewhere inside town, he practiced his set of auto-attacks. From his vision, he could see himself automatically pull back on the bow-string as taught by Sayha, and letting the arrow fly. It struck the mark, but not in the bullseye. ‘Perhaps it would take a bit more practice before it’ll actually be a bullseye.’ As he said this he tried out this laser attack he discovered not too long ago. It appeared in his skill list when he toggled on his Trebuchet Engine. Activating the skill by holding his hand alongside his bow, palm facing the target; the beam shot from the dead center of his hand, striking the target directly in the bullseye. ‘At least that skill is easier to aim. Targets don’t normally stand still though, right?’ He had never been in battle before, and had no idea how he would actually fair. Lucky for him though, he overheard a lander asking other nearby adventurers who were practicing their own skills in public about some goblin scouts wreaking havoc on travelers passing through Thames.
‘Perfect’ Vai thought, leaving his combat stance and slinging his bow around his shoulder. Walking up to the lander, he introduced himself. “Hey, nice to meet you. I’m Vai.” He closed his eyes for a moment, still being used to his usual blindness of the real world. At this rate he’ll never get used to vision. “I heard about the goblins. I’ll do it, from what I’ve heard they aren’t too tough.” Vai smiled to assure the lander, but the man in front of him didn’t seem impressed.
“I recognize that gear... I’m sure you won’t succeed but go ahead and try anyways. I’ll give you a reward if you bring back one of their bandanas.” The lander sounded extremely skeptical on Vai’s abilities, as he should probably be. “I won’t wait for your return, if I can I’ll send as many of you adventurers as I can. You’ll probably find them somewhere inside the swamp.” The lander muttered something under his breath about landers reviving anyways so he shouldn’t care if he dies or not, but Vai ignored the man’s side comment entirely.
“Thanks for the words of encouragement. I’ll get you that bandana.” Vai did a slight bow, before turning around and heading out of town to get on his way.
It didn’t take too long before he got into the muck of the marshlands. There were some trees here and there, but they didn’t seem too healthy. Occasional slimes would look his way as he traveled but none attacked; a few seemed to follow him for nearly a mile before giving up. Whatever it was, they seemed attracted to him for some reason. Feeling a bit tired of tredging around in the muck, he took a sit next to a tree stump for a quick break. About thirty seconds into his break, he felt a sharp pain as the stump lashed out at him angrily. “Holy sh-” Vai jumped up and backed away from the psychopathic stump, now babbling incoherently in his general direction. “Well, that’s actually quite comical.” Vai said aloud, before the stump started throwing sticks and stones in his direction, causing him to duck and run off, losing his original path. Now being entirely lost, and tired, he attempted to get his bearings. Glancing at where he ended up, he noticed exactly what was around him before, a few trees dotting the landscape, some docile critters here and there, but no road. “Damn, what a way to get lost.” Vai closed his eyes before wandering forward. It didn’t really matter if he couldn’t see where he was going at this point; to him it was easier to find his way blind.
Around fifteen minutes of wandering, Vai decided to open his eyes. Off in the distance he could see partial tents made from... he couldn’t tell at this point but whatever they were, they were not the kind of structures anyone with half a brain would have made. A couple of short, greenish creatures sat around a fire, sharpening small silverish objects with various stones they probably had found on the ground nearby. One thought popped into his head; ‘short, green, that sounds like the description of a goblin to me.’ Instinctively crouching, he looked around for a vantage point. There was a tree, not too far from the Goblins camp where he could probably perch and shoot at them with ranged attacks, and he decided to try this idea. He had never climbed a tree before, it terrified him back in the real world. The feeling of not touching the ground was just too intense back then, but now he could physically see the ground. It wasn’t that terrifying. Reaching about five to six feet off the ground, he stood on the tree, each leg planted on two different branches, one in front of the other for stability. Bouncing two times, it seemed as though the tree wasn’t going to fall. “Good, it seems stable.” Vai muttered to himself as he grabbed an arrow, targeted the nearest goblin, and prepared to fire the shot.
As the man pulled back on his bow, he heard shouting from the distance, causing the goblins he was aiming at to look directly at him. ‘Ohh no.’ His mind spoke automatically. ‘They see me. Fire! FIRE NOW!’ He released the arrow, and it flew far... so far in fact that it actually landed behind the goblin he was aiming at. ‘Laser, laser now now now!’ He held out his hand to fire the laser, but the goblin started running at him and it missed by a small amount. Vai was panicking, and he quickly drew another arrow and fired another laser at his target, this time only the laser connected, reducing the selected goblins health bar by... a rather decent amount for a level one character, but not enough to really put a huge dent in it. Before the two goblins charging at him got even half the distance, something grabbed his leg and pulled him out of the tree. Another goblin! It stood over him triumphantly, holding a dagger into the sky preparing to strike. Vai’s mind instinctively started causing his Riot Blade to activate; he knew what it did, but not exactly how to utilize such an awkward weapon. As the blade appeared out of his hand, the goblin stabbed him, causing a quick bit of pain and taking a decent chunk of his health off. ‘I can’t take much more of that kind of hit,’ Vai said, seeing the health bar in the corner of his vision take a dip. The blade finally created, he scrambled away from the goblin, wrapping his bow around his shoulder before holding out his left hand and firing a laser at point blank range, nailing the goblin right in the forehead. The damage dealt remained the same though, at least it seemed like it.
Now Vai and the Weak Goblin Scout were trapped in close quarters, Vai on the defensive and the goblin sneering. Each strike the goblin sent at Vai, he had done his best to parry it with his Riot Blade, and with such fast movement Vai began getting a slight headache. The thoughts of his death were all he could think about however, that and the current fight he was in. This feeling was absolutely dreadful, why would anyone want to fight like this? Another laser came from his hand, striking the goblin again as Vai blocked the knife once more, this time pushing it aside and striking with his Riot Blade. This goblin here in front of him, it seemed to finally be getting tired, and began to back away from Vai. Seeming to stop out of nowhere, the combat became calm, and shortly after cackling could be heard. Both of the goblins from the camp came running from around the tree, and helped block off Vai’s left and right flank. ‘Oh... now there is three. Great.’ Glancing over his shoulder, he noticed two more goblins had been sneaking up on him. ‘And there goes my exit strategy... what a way to die.’ All hope seemed lost, and Vai’s combat stance, albeit terrible as is, turned into more of a casual stance. He accepted his fate.
