When Eglantine Brown awoke from the blackout the Catastrophe triggered in all of the players, she very calmly smoothed the fabric of the unfamiliar clothes she found herself wearing and sat up properly to study her surroundings. Eglantine was sitting on a tiled roof, which in turn stood in the center of a flat-topped concrete building covered with moss and other plant life. In fact, the green wasn’t limited to the area around her; it seemed it was on all the buildings that blocked her view of the blue sky. Where was she? How did she get here? And how high up was she that she had an unobstructed view of the sky and the clouds that raced through it?

She ruled out the possibility of her being unusually alert in a dream immediately after she wondered where she was. Despite one of a dream’s characteristics being the dreamer’s inability to determine how he got there, it was also true that the dreamer’s capability to sense peculiarities should be nonexistent, and hers was fully operational. The experience was certainly surreal, but as life had felt that way ever since Phillip died, Eglantine kept herself too numb to be bothered too acutely by the strangeness of being somewhere she shouldn’t be.

In any case, one of her cousins was a doctor and she loved to tell stories about her work. One of the possibilities Eglantine was seriously considering was that she was merely in a very vivid hallucination, though even that option had two variations. The first was that she could be conscious and was misinterpreting her surroundings. The roof-on-a-roof she was sitting on could very well have been her hospital bed, while the sky around her was something her mind conjured to compensate for the actual room’s lack of a view.

“Nurse?” She croaked weakly. Eglantine cleared her throat and called a little louder. “Nurse? Phillip?” While she waited to see if a stranger might pop out of nowhere and speak with her nurse or her younger brother’s voices, Eglantine put her hand to her ribs where a knife wound had recently been stitched and dressed. It should have been tender and throbbing, but she felt nothing. Taking a look at it right now was out of the question; there was no telling who had cameras where anymore. After gently pressing the areas she was certain were supposed to hurt, she studied her clothing next. Instead of the standard backless gown that hospitals required their patients to wear, she was clad in what appeared to be a leather apron and matching trousers and gloves. It looked oddly familiar, but there was a saying that she recalled in times like this; there is nothing new under the sun. It was impossible to create something completely new and free from outside influences. She shook the feeling off and continued studying her garb.

Where she wasn’t covered in the thick fabric, she could see a bit of the cloth that she felt sitting between the leather and her skin. It was a rough blend of linen, but although she was used to sacrificing comfort for appearance, whatever she was wearing had none of either. The best she could say about it was that the cloth didn’t make her itch, which reminded her of her stitches and their inexplicable loss.

Where were they? It was possible she wouldn’t be able to hear or recognize anyone of course, but it didn’t become an issue. Nothing happened in the next few minutes, which suggested she might be having hallucinations of the other kind. If so, then her state of consciousness was irrelevant; whether she was conscious or not, she could be under the influence of a very strong hallucinogenic that had her convinced she had been transferred to a movie set in her sleep. Somehow she doubted it however. Her cousin had made it sound like the patient was dreaming. If she was right, then her earlier reasons for doubting she was asleep held true for this particular theory as well.

The problem with rejecting those three hypotheses was that they were the most obvious and most reasonable. If she wasn’t sitting on a random rooftop in strange garments because of one of those reasons, then what explanations were left to her? She considered herself to be a fairly open-minded person, but she found it difficult to believe that she had contracted a severe form of amnesia and was actually further into the future than what her memories prepared her for. After considering her choices, she decided to work under hypothesis D; it was more reasonable than the fifth option of time travel at least, and until she could think of something less fanciful or found proof that she was wrong, then it was her best bet for the moment. It wouldn’t do to flounder about from indecision.

This was the part in movies or books where it turns out the protagonist was foolish for wandering off; his companions would come back for him and reveal that he had a secret past that made him a hot target, or his noisy footsteps would awaken terrible aliens that had been asleep for centuries, all because he couldn’t wait a few more minutes for rescue. Her brother was also a fan of thrillers; it was something they had in common.

“Phillip?” She tentatively called out for him again, and again, there was no response. With literally nothing holding her back (such as knife wounds or IV tubes), Eglantine gingerly got to her feet. She put a bit of weight on her toes to see if her knees would buckle before she allowed herself to stand properly, a hand still on the roof in case she overestimated herself. Aside from the strange feeling of not feeling pain while not wearing heels, she felt fine. This only added to the strangeness of the experience however; she wasn’t supposed to be so healthy.

“Phillip?” She called out once more, giving him one last chance to stop her before she unwittingly disconnected herself from the machines and medicines keeping her alive. Just saying his name made her chest ache however; her brother and her late husband had shared the same name, a fact they mutually found hilarious when they met over dinner one night, the first time she brought her husband home.

‘He isn’t my husband anymore.’ The haze that Eglantine carefully kept herself in was thinning. She closed her eyes and took a deep breath. ‘I’m sorry love, but I can’t. Not yet.’ She dispelled thoughts of him by focusing on her brother.

Phillip Price was one of her youngest siblings. He had only just turned twelve when she had been admitted to the hospital, and she couldn’t find it in her heart to tell her little brother that his existence caused her pain. There was no way for her to be certain she could make him understand that it wasn’t personal and that there was nothing he could do about it. Such a task was difficult enough to attempt on adults, much less budding teenagers. And so she smiled sadly at him as she did for everyone else, taking care to avoid looking at him or his general area whenever it was his turn to keep her company. He was old enough to understand why she was generally unhappy at least; that was why he had come to her room with his new favorite game in tow as well.

Eglantine shuffled forward slowly, alert for anything that felt like needles being pulled out of her skin. When she had taken several steps and felt nothing, not even pain, she dared to walk a bit more normally, and less like she was going to bleed out if she moved the wrong way. Her limbs were strong and her movements steady. Eglantine reached the only door she could access from the roof faster than she thought she would and pulled on it carefully. It however, aside from being covered with the same amount of moss as the rest of the building, remained firmly shut. Eglantine clutched her side with the stitches and pulled harder. The door made a slight squealing sound quieted by the wet moss and stopped, barely moving an inch. It seemed that it was rusted shut. ‘What could have caused this?’

If she were, in fact, experiencing hypothesis B, then the door could have been locked, if not for the bit of give she had earned with that last heave. She still couldn’t understand why anyone would leave her alone however. Eglantine looked around for something she could use to pry open the door. If she were under hypothesis D, how did she get up here when the door was rusted shut? Could she have climped up the side, or maybe fallen from above? She could also have been left behind on purpose, but to what end?

It was starting to look like Eglantine needed to get away as fast as possible, while drawing the least amount of attention to herself. As she walked around the rooftop looking for a conveniently-left-behind crowbar, she saw that a section of the roof that hadn't been visible to her earlier had actually collapsed, resulting in a crater where the plantlife from the rooftop spilled into in a thick weave. Well that was one way to get down.

Before she committed herself to the plunge however, Eglantine made another round of the rooftop, in case she might find another exit or anything else that could prove useful. No such luck. As she walked however, Eglantine grew used to being in peak health again. Her strides gradually widened and she breathed easier, free of the fear that she wouldn't know if she were bleeding out already. Besides, on the off chance she really was killing herself, if she were already so far along that she couldn't sense any interventions that were being made, she didn't see the point in living anyway.

She was alone.

Eglantine approached the edge of the hole cautiously. Wherever or whenever she was, judging solely from the amount of plant life that had taken root and spread everywhere, this building seemed old. It was better to be paranoid, as she had no way of knowing what had caused that part of the roof to collapse in the first place. Reaching the edge without difficulty, Eglantine stood very still as she tried to look further inside, something made difficult by the darkness practically solidifying around the area lit by the crater. As she considered the different ways she could descend, the ground gave way from under her feet.

Eglantine fell. Not in the sense that she tripped and planted her face first in the floor, but very much like if she jumped feet first from a diving board, without the premeditation. She flung her arms out, flailing as she tried to find something to hold on to as bits of rock rained down on her and bigger blocks smashed into the floor, sending dust all around. Her hands felt something paper-like and delicate. Instantly recognizing them as leaves, she reached past them and seized the web of stems and roots that was the core of the blanket she had inserted earlier. They tore as she fell, and Eglantine kept clawing at the blanket, trying to find a thicker patch. All this happened in a matter of seconds. When the blanket seemed to jerk upward and the plants she clutched ripped out of the bigger tapestry, it was a sign that the ceiling above stopped crumbling. Nevertheless, it was the roaring rumble of concrete breaking and the structure collapsing that filled Eglantine’s ears as she was flung into a wall and knocked out.

She awoke an hour later, gasping as she jolted awake. It was as if it had been only seconds since she had lost consciousness, if not for the curious feeling that she knew more time had passed her by while she was out cold. Her heart still raced in her chest as she sat up and assessed her situation. Aside from slight disorientation and the surreal feeling that persisted, Eglantine felt fine. It seemed another crater had been made beneath the one she had fallen through, though this one was much smaller than the other; this didn’t bode well for Eglantine, who now had no way of getting back up to the roof without assistance of some kind, and had evidence to suggest that the building was in the mood to literally bring the house down.

Now that she was out of the sun however, she could finally see what was in the shadows. There weren't many places where natural light could come in, but Eglantine had enough of it to see impressions of rows and rows of cubicles and desks filling the open space. Darker patches of shadow lined the walls in a predictable pattern; windows and doors of the small offices and conference rooms that ringed the arena of paper pushers. Surprisingly. The windows that opened to the outside didn't gape as wide as she expected; this must have been one of the older buildings, constructed before the advent of glass as the preferred material for walls, dividers, doors, and etc. Rotten shades still hung over the windows however, letting in trickles of light where rats or nature had their way.

Not far from where she lay were the remains of several old pieces of furniture that had probably been destroyed in the recent collapse. Seeing something that looked promising, Eglantine got up and carefully picked her way over to a scattering of wood and metal. She picked out a piece that probably used to be a table's leg and was as long as three quarters of her arm to keep as a weapon. She didn't linger long; Eglantine immediately returned to the wall she had been knocked out against and began walking down the corridor, her boots making loud tapping sounds even as she tread carefully over a thick layer of dust and moss. She needed to get away from the crater.

She was somewhere around the middle of the floor when she found a section in the wall she was following had a faint line of light at its base. She finally found the door leading out. Luckily for her, this one was wooden; all Eglantine needed to do was lean against it to knock it off its hinges. The corridor the door led to was only a couple of meters across, though it seemed to be as wide as the area she had just left and had large windows at either end, making it easier for Eglnatine to see. Several elevator doors were rusted shut in front of her, but she could clearly see the top and bottom steps of the staircases at the far end of the corridor. Before she took them however, Eglantine's eyes were fixed on a door with a black outline of a person in a dress painted on it at eye level.

The door to the ladies' toilet had already been slightly ajar when Eglantine saw it, so all she had to do was push it open further, the resulting loud squeal making her skin crawl. Eglantine stepped inside, but froze when she saw her reflection on the cracked mirrors that lined the opposite wall. There was no mistaking the blue haired person she saw for anybody else; those were her eyes looking back at her using her face, though everything else was different. Eglantine lifted a hand to touch her hair. It felt real, but what was going on? She thought she had lost a chunk of her memory and was sometime in the future, but her face looked exactly the same, and even if she had dyed her hair to hide the grey, that didn't explain why her body looked healthier and younger than before. She looked like she was in her early twenties again. ‘I've gone mad.’

Before she continued hypothesizing however, Eglantine put her wooden table leg down on the sink as cleared her mind of anything that didn't involve how to use an aged modern toilet. ‘Still not dreaming. People don't feel the need to use the loo, much less actually pee in dreams.’

When she exited the stall, she studied herself again in the mirror. With the effects of her initial surprise fading, she realized she had seen something like this before. The avatar that Phillip helped her make had hair and clothes just like the ones she had on right now. It was different, seeing something as a small three dimensional model and then suddenly seeing it in materialized with more intricate detail right in front of you. This knowledge changed things though. Hallucinations were back on the table, but any sort of amnesia or time travel was out. Reluctantly, Eglantine formed a theory involving alternate realities.

Her dead husband's face flashed in her mind, but she dismissed it. It was too much to hope for.

It was also too late. The idea that he was in this world had somehow taken root and refused to be shaken off. Her heart seemed to swell with hope as it tried to rise out of her chest like a balloon. This was making her reckless; she rushed back into the office space and, without thinking, called his name out repeatedly. “Phillip! Philliiiip?!” She ran despite being sightless, knocking into things just as often as she didn't, a madwoman looking everywhere looking for her dead husband. She only stopped when she ran into a large shard of glass and impaled herself, screaming as the pain intensified the sense of anguish she already felt at being unable to find what she was looking for.

Eglantine did not die instantly, however. People who get stabbed but have the weapon still in them have an advantage; the foreign object acts like a cork, slowing the bleeding out process and giving time for help to arrive. Whether or not that cork is removed however, the amount of blood one loses every second also depends on what was cut in the attack. Smaller vein, less blood, more time.

But it did not matter either. Eglantyne was in shock.

Eglantyne pressed her hand on her abdomen as she held her breath and pulled herself away from the glass, though it was impossible not to make any sound while doing so. Her already pale skin lost even more color and her breathing became shallow and ragged. Delirious, Eglantine walked a wobbly path right into the crater.



For the third time in as many hours, Eglantine awoke in a strange place. It took her a moment to remember where she was and what had happened since she first found herself in a strange place. What she didn't understand was why she was still alive, or how she even got there.

Not unlike the time she awoke on a roof within a roof, Eglantine found herself resting on a raised platform that could’ve been a bed. This time however, she was indoors. As if to make up for it, the vaulted ceiling must have been several stories high, and the room she was in was extremely large and old fashioned. As Eglantyne sat up, she noted the broken pews, stained-glass windows, and the overall cross shape of the hall.

She was in Westminster Abbey.

Not being a definitive expert on the subject, Eglantine was, of course, just hazarding a guess. She did, however, watch the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton on the telly, which sparked an interest in the Abbey itself as she fantasized about getting married there. At twenty three, she had still been quite a romantic. She was made fun of because of it, as such behavior was atypical of teenagers, not young adults, but it didn’t bother her.

Eglantine righted herself once more and slid off the altar she had woken up on. Her mind was the clearest it had been for a while now; the haze was still there keeping her blissfully numb to everything, but thoughts of her ex-husband were far from her mind. She finally noticed, for example, that she had an empty bag behind her and strapped to the belt around her hips. She didn’t expect to find anything inside, but she lifted the flap and stuck her hand in to take a look. She frowned; the bag felt unusually large on the inside. When her fingers touched something hard, she started. ‘What the?’

Moving forward to one of the steps, Eglantine sat down on the mossy floor and worked on detaching the bag from her belt. When that was done, she placed the bag on her lap, took a deep breath, and stuck her hand in once more. When she touched the solid object again, she slipped her fingers around it and grasped the cylindrical object in her hand. It felt like a handle made from wood, and she was certain that her arm shouldn’t have been able to reach that far and still not be touching the bottom.

At the very end of the shaft (that must have been taller than she was standing) was an axe head with a pointed top. It squeezed through the bag’s opening without cutting anything, and Eglantine could only stare.

She had just broken the laws of physics, with the weapon that was a bit heavier than it looked. She could have held it aloft with one hand, but maneuvering it properly would have required her to use both. How did it get in there though?

Standing around wouldn’t get her any answers however. As much as it bothered her, she would have to continue as if it was perfectly normal to pull out seven feet tall pole weapons from a bag that wasn’t even a foot when it was flat.

Laying the halberd (not that she knew what it was called) down on the floor, Eglantyne shifted her position so that she was kneeling in front of the magical vessel. Wondering what else could have been in there, she slid in her fingers, her wrist, and eventually her forearm. The top of the bag hadn’t even reached the crook of her elbow before she finally felt the bottom of the bag, exactly where it should be.

A very loud and eerie groaning noise that echoed in the Cathedral’s acoustics prompted Eglantine to grab her things and dart to the side, meaning to hide behind the pews while she snuck peeks at whoever it was opened the huge doors into the building. Her plan was foiled magnificently by the head of her axe snagging on the old wood which, because she had been holding on to it so tightly with both hands nonetheless, caused her to slip as the weapon jerked her upper body upwards. The motion caused her to twist slightly as she fell, so that she landed (painfully) on her side.

“What was that?” Someone hissed at her yelp of pain. The air hissed from Eglantine’s sharp intake of breath; boots and armor clattered as several people rushed to the altar from the center and the side aisle, a tactic to prevent escape. It was unnecessary; Eglantine barely moved or made a sound. They found her curled in a fetal position with her eyes squeezed shut and clutching her left arm, quietly enduring her discomfort. “Are you alright?” Someone asked from her feet.

“Did you revive here after dying?” ‘What?’

“John!” Someone scolded. A male, she was surprised to hear. Eglantine opened her eyes, her blurred vision quickly sharpening as she got used to seeing again. Her blue hair was spread out underneath her, reminding her about her brother and the game.

“So did you?” John demanded again, to more than one person shushing him this time. “No.” She said faintly, trying to sit up. She heard footsteps and saw an impression of someone approaching her from the corner of her eye, then small hands gently settled on her shoulders, supporting her while she righted herself.

“I’m sorry we frightened you.”

While most of the people who had entered the cathedral were now gathered around the altar and examining it and the area surrounding it, the rest of their group were stationed at the doors, looking like they were guarding against people going in or out. Rather than making the attempt and risk causing a scene, Eglantine picked herself up and straightened her clothes, trying to do so with as much dignity as she could muster. There was only so much nitpicking one could do with a plain leather jerkin though.

After smoothing her hair over her shoulder one last time, Eglantine studied the people around the altar with her halberd to her side, the butt end resting on the mossy floor as she held it upright.

“I’m certain this is the one.” Their leader, John, repeated. Out of all the players there, he must have been the youngest. He was tall and had the lean musculature that was popular among teens nowadays. He could have been one of those baby-faced people who never looked old, but his voice was unmistakably that of someone going through puberty. “In the game, this was the cathedral we’re supposed to revive in. Obviously the graphics are more realistic than what we’re used to, but I’m pretty sure.”

“Make up your mind. How certain are you?” One of the older males snapped. Rather than taking it personally, John looked thoughtful. “There’s one quick way to find out.” The others gasped and protested this decision, but Eglantine drowned out their buzzing with questions of her own. ‘What game is he talking about? The one Phillip had me try?’

Taking into consideration the other people's quiet discussions amongst themselves, Eglantine had a vague idea of their own theory about what happened. On one hand, it was comforting to know it wasn't all in her head (or was it?), but on the other, it all still sounded quite ridiculous. Stepping inside the game? Even if Eglantine did have blue hair like her avatar's (the movie by James Cameron had made the term more commonly used) and an unusually healthy body, she still had her own face didn't she? More plausible (albeit still very unlikely) was the scenario wherein some insane organization (because this couldn't have been pulled off by a lone individual) kidnapped several people found to have been playing the game and knocked them out for a significant period of time, during which they were transformed to resemble their avatars and then relocated to an isolated area that was designed to be a strange incarnation of London. For what purpose, she didn't know.

Whatever had happened, although Eglantine was a fan of works of fiction, she wasn't the type to completely lose herself in a fantasy and hide from the real world. Even with her loss, the base instinct to look down in those who would remained. Falling in love with characters in a book was all well and good, but if you shirked your responsibilities and ignored the real people around you? Unforgivable.

These people, whoever they were, seemed perfectly willing to leave behind their real lives and settle down in this one. Her disgust closed her usually liberal mind.

John, the lanky man-child from before, was actually a level four Assassin. She never got a good look at his face, but she supposed that was him standing on the ledge of one of the stained glass windows that lined the walls three stories up.

“John I mean it, get down from there!”

“What’s he doing?”

“Being a dramatic arse. He’s going to prove that you resurrect in the Cathedral, just like in the game.”

“John, are you mad?!”

“It’s quicker than poison!” He bellowed. Eglantine cursed. The boy was stupid. Who commits suicide to prove a theory? She looked around for something that might be used as a cushion or a net, but unless the moss and vines that lined the floor were actually part of a piece of carpet, there was nothing she could do. Some of the others were already running into doorways, trying to reach the player on time. Not everyone was so practical though.

“Just jump already!” Someone yelled.

“No!”

“Here goes!” And he leapt. Despite herself, Eglantine screamed. She wasn’t the only one however; several voices competed like a horrific battle cry. Eglantine rushed to the walls, trying to get away from the spot where John would inevitably—

SPLAT! Eglantine stopped running and curled up into a ball, palms over ears and eyes shut. Why was this happening? She didn’t want to be here. Phillip—it felt like something was being ripped out of her chest as the haze that had protected her for most of the time she’d spent here had once again failed her.

She didn’t know what had to have come over her to have made such a decision, but after an unknown period of time, Eglantine opened her eyes and turned around. Her limbs went limp, resulting in lowered arms and her crumpling to the ground as she saw the group of people loosely surrounding someone in front of the altar.

“You wanker!” Someone yelled shrilly, earning several laughs from the crowd. Another person started to make a joke, but Eglantine didn’t hear the rest of it, just the mischievous chuckles that signaled the punch line. “You could have died!”

“Well, I did, technically.” “Don’t try being clever with me!” What did he say? How is he… What did he… mean, by that? “If you die here, you revive at the Cathedral, just like in the game.” John confirmed, happy that he had proven his theory, but still wary of something. Maybe Eglantine had been too quick to judge this one. Despite having a better idea of where they were, the group of players still talked to each other in worried tones. ‘Looks like they do have sense after all.’

“But how can this be?” Someone wondered aloud. “It’s not like it was a virtual reality game we could’ve gotten trapped in. This is real! How did Elder Tales become real?!” Nobody had an answer, though a few people made shushing noises and told him to calm down.

‘Mad, the lot of them.’ Eglantine thought, getting up slowly. It was time to leave. The atmosphere didn’t feel as tense as it did earlier, so she felt more confident that they would let her go without incident.

“What about the gee ems?” Someone asked thoughtfully. Eglantine straightened her clothes and her hair. ‘Really, this is so unmanageable.’ It probably wouldn’t hurt to tie her hair back before leaving. She settled on the nearest pew that looked sturdy enough to support her wait and balanced her weapon on her lap before she gathered her hair over her left shoulder.

“The Game Masters haven’t said anything through the usual channels.” Someone else replied. Eglantine immediately understood that that the other person was using an acronym, though she was more focused on deciding how to style her hair while absentmindedly combing it with her fingers. She decided on a simple three strand braid before the next person spoke.

“We’ll have to wait for a day; see if anybody else shows up. Otherwise, looks like the only people who’re here are whoever was logged in when we blacked out.”

“I’ve just remembered something. Did anyone else see that weird starter screen? The black one with fire?” Eglantine paused. Now that someone mentioned it, she did remember seeing it, though she had just chalked up her inability to remember where she knew it from to being part of the amnesia theory. Could they be onto something after all? Eglantine knew nothing about this world because she’d only tried it out the same day that, whatever happened, did.

“Would you like to come with us?” It took Eglantine a moment to realize the question had been intended for her.

“Me?” She said faintly, delicately touching her collarbone as she gestured to herself. A brief pause, then, “Are you sure?”

“You looked lost ever since we found you.” John again, though he had a kind expression on his face. Death seemed to have made him more amiable. “You don’t play, do you?” It wasn’t a question, but Eglantine nodded anyway. “Come along with us then. You wouldn’t be a bother; we could always use an extra Druid.” After another pause, Eglantine took her halberd in hand and stood up. There was nowhere else she could go anyway.

While heading out of London, a girl in her party named Rose taught her how to use the interface. This, more than John’s resurrection, convinced her that their theory was sound.

“Just focus on your forehead. If it helps, you can think of your mind as a projector and imagine pushing the image out and in sight.” It took a while (she panicked the first time she did it successfully and saw shapes of light flicker in and out of existence), but Eglantine managed it successfully. A status window on the upper right corner showed her name, class, level, and health and magic points (she remembered that much from what Phillip taught her), but the main menu was in the center, anchored by a round emblem featuring a pink tree. Around it were icons with labels for skills, quests, equipment, and items. On the upper left was her location, and on the lower left were ‘logout’ and ‘option’ buttons. Beside those, in the bottom center of her ‘screen’, was the button for her friendlist. She looked expectantly back at Rose, who was watching her as well.

“Have you got it?” Eglantine frowned. The components of the interface had moved together with the turn of her head so that they were between her and Rose now. “Yes. Can’t you see it?”

Rose shook her head. “You can only see your own interface. Now, treat them like you can actually touch them and select ‘Skills’.” Eglantine obliged. “What do you see?”

“Familiar: Alraune.” She recited. Genevieve looked disappointed, but carried on.

“Try pressing it.” Eglantine did. Deep blue petals seemed to fall out of her hair, agitating Eglantine, but Genevieve put a hand on her arm and smiled. “Just watch.” The petals fell to her hips before they fluttered upward again as if being carried along by the wind, sailing around Eglantine as if she were in the center of a whirlwind. After a moment, the petals congregated in a spherical shape in front of the Druid. Slowly, the shape grew more irregular, sprouting limbs and a head. Eglantine’s heart twisted as she noticed its humanoid shape, reminding her of the children she had left behind and practically given away.

“This, is your Alraune.”
