The Alraune made a sound like a gurgling whistle, like if songbirds had to sing with their beaks full of water. It was pleasant to the ears, but it didn’t change her mood. Eglantine avoided looking at it, though it was difficult when some of its blue petals were always in sight.

“That’s enough for now. Press the skill button again to unsummon it.” Eglantine complied, and her Alraune gave one last gurgling whistle before it abandoned its humanoid shape and devolved into a cloud of petals before fading away into nothing. “Easy, right? Any questions?” Eglantine shook her head and smiled weakly back at her.

“What next?”

“Just experiment. Try and add your skills to the hotkey slots.”

“Sorry, the what?” Rose stared incredulously. “It… the hotkey… wait. Is this your first game?” Eglantine nodded, unashamed and unapologetic for her ignorance. To her mind, there was no point pretending she had experience with this sort of thing. If she had known that player killing was something that could be done however, she might have thought differently.

“Yeah, it is.” That brought her up short. Taking her cue, Eglantine stopped as well. However, Donna, a male player who was part of their group and had been listening to them the entire time, put an arm around each of them and pulled them along with him.

“So what, Rosie? You’re cool with being stuck in another world, but you can't handle a newbie?” Rose glared at him, but Donna laughed it off. “I’ll help if this spoilsport won’t.” He assured Eglantine with a wink and a charming smile.

Rose got over her aversion and patiently taught her about hotkey bars, items, equipment, and everything else she could about the interface, with Donna making teasing remarks every so often. They had gotten to talking about their real lives and what they were doing when they were sucked into the game when the others spoke up.

“Wands out, class.” Donna said grimly. They were crossing the threshold into the combat zone, as Rose had explained earlier. “Just keep your halberd out, and summon your Alraune whenever we go into combat and we ask for support. You can probably just watch for now.” The first group engaged a Dull Green Slime. “Just like the game.” Donna muttered, surprising Eglantine with his serious side. She kept forgetting that, despite their habit of calling the world they were in a game, they were taking things quite seriously.

‘World.’ It was mad, but it made sense, if she were to believe that the lot of them weren’t all escapees from a mental institution. She supposed she would have to treat it as such until they could prove otherwise. If they could prove otherwise.

The creatures they encountered (“Call them monsters.” Rose said, earning a rolling of eyes from Donna) were all low levelled and easily defeated so that Rose, who was a fellow Druid, could keep up a running commentary inbetween her own kills. “Just swing your weapon, don’t think too much about what you’re doing.” She had said after her first one. “It almost feels intuitive.” That was easy for her to say though, since she was level four as well. They must have gotten in some training before getting trapped here.

No matter what the others said to try to help her, Eglantine just couldn’t defeat a monster by herself. While beginners could typically handle at least one Dull Green Slime by themselves, the Druid kept overthinking everything and failed to attack properly. It wasn’t for lack of trying or due to a weak stomach however. Eglantine had a determined look in her eye every time she swung her weapon like an executioner’s axe. The problem lay in her inability to hit things. For a while, her companions were indulgent and allowed her to simply deal a blow while somebody kept the monster’s attention on themselves and gain experience that way. Considering how weak they all still were however, it wasn’t a good tactic. Good for her, of course, but not for the rest of the group. Naturally, they had to let her go.

“Sorry, Bean.” Donna said as he escorted her back to London. They were supposed to just keep moving and let her find her way back to the city herself, but he had volunteered for the task, which irritated Rose immensely. He supposedly came up with the odd nickname while trying to say her name properly. Eglantine wasn’t such a unique and strange name that nobody could make an educated guess about how to pronounce it, but Donna had stumbled over the middle syllables, somehow saying “lentil”, which turned into “bean”. In a different time, she might have fallen for the charming “dork”. Alas. The girl Rose seemed to be fond of him as well.

“Thank you.” She said to Donna when they had crossed into the safe zone, offering an apologetic smile. He answered with a warm hug that made Eglantine’s stomach clench.

“Don’t mention it, Bean. Take care, alright?” He made a move to go, but stopped mid-turn. “Here.” Donna made gestures in the air. Eglantine, recognizing it as him accessing the user interface Rose had taught her earlier, was only mildly surprised when a message appeared in her own, describing a trade for gold.

“Take it. I can get more with the others.” Donna walked her through the steps needed to finalize the trade before giving her another hug and walked away, without looking back this time. This was fine with the Druid, whose knees buckled from under her as she was once more overcome by grief.



Eglantine was indistinguishable from the rest of the troubled souls that loitered around the unpaved streets. Nobody bothered her. When the weakness had passed, Eglantine picked herself up and tried to make her way back to the old Cathedral. While she was never the devout and pious type who snubbed anyone who disagreed with her convictions, her religion was something she was born into, and that training produced an association of places of worship with sanctuary. Religion was something she thought about on occasion and usually agreed with. The children she and Philip had taken on were much too young for any conversation about what to teach them to go into effect, and they agreed not to make any decisions until one of them turned six. They wanted to teach them to be good people, without the threat of punishment making the choice for them.

The Cathedral had not been difficult to find. Although many people stayed still in on spot, speaking to whoever they hoped were looking down on them from the sky, there were also those who wandered aimlessly along with a crowd, like a pack of zombies. One of these groups eventually shuffled into the square outside the large building, but few went inside. Eglantine broke away then, slipping between the front doors to settle into a pew. Having nothing else to do, she prayed. When she grew hungry and tired, she stretched herself out to lie on the bench, and then slept.



Eglantine woke a few hours later with stiff cheeks, sand in her eyes, and a painful hole in her middle from not eating anything the day before. Unable to return to sleep, the Druid forced herself to get up and hunt for food. She searched the building for a kitchen, hoping to find a pantry or a refrigerator stocked with food or water. There were none to be found in the ancient structure, however. Forced to abandon the search by an increasingly irritable stomach, Eglantine quietly slipped out of the Cathedral.

Even knowing London was supposed to be a safe place, there was no arguing with years of training to be wary of being out alone at night, especially on an empty stomach. There were still small groups of people about, but not enough for her to think that so long as she stayed where there were many people to act as witnesses, she would be fine.

It did not help that the streets were darker here than in the real London. While there was nothing to obstruct her view of the sky or dim the glow of the stars twinkling up there, the shabby state of affairs also meant that there weren’t any brightly lit stores or signs to lend their light to the dirt streets. The occasional streetlamp appeared to be lit by self-contained balls of light, but Eglantine did not dawdle too long in one place to gather enough evidence to be certain. When she saw the first “shop” with its lights still on, Eglantine increased her pace and stuck her boot beside the door jamb to prevent whoever was swinging the door shut from doing so.

“Excuse me please, I need—” Ggggrrruuuuuuuuhh. Her stomach’s complaint overwhelmed her words. “I have gold. I just need something to—” Again, her stomach growled . The woman who held the door seemed to have an internal debate before she pulled it open just enough to let Eglantine slip in and closed it quickly behind her.

“Follow me.” She said, in a tone that was both sympathetic but strict. As the beggar in this situation, Eglantine couldn’t complain. The person she was following was a middle-aged woman, with greyless brown hair tied back in a bun on her head, and a simple overdress made from a course brown material that she strongly suspected was burlap. The white fabric beneath it seemed to match her own, which made everything feel like the middle ages if it weren’t for the odd piece of modern technology.

“We only have bread to spare at the moment.” The lady said, leading Eglantine into their small cooking and dining area. Then again, ‘small’ was relative; unlike the real world where everything you needed to cook and eat could fit in a small room, people in the Middle Ages still used cauldrons or spits and actual fireplaces and things. The room was fairly large for a kitchen (which made it normal-sized for a multi-purpose room), but considering how little open space there actually was, it looked small and cozy. A corner of the room held a tree stump and assorted logs and chopped wood, complete with an axe. The fireplace beside it was dark and cold and held a lidded deep pot on a grate. Assorted pots and pans, plates, bowls, utensils, and tankards were neatly arranged on pegs around the room and on a display shelf across the room, though a free standing table near the fireplace seemed to hold more pots that were probably filled with spices or honey and the like. Between this table and the display case was a long wooden dining table and some benches, with two baskets of something wrapped in cloth sitting in the middle of it. It was one of these baskets that the lady pulled towards her and unwrapped, revealing part of a loaf.

“We might have some cheese that’s a bit ripe to go with it...” She said slowly, as if disbelieving her own memory or something.

“If you can spare them.” Adler said simply, rooting through her bag for some coins. “How much for the lot?”

The lady gave her a number that was well within her means, so Eglantine made the purchase gladly and thanked her benefactor profusely. She was escorted out a side door that opened out into an alley, a corner of the cloth her acquisition was wrapped in still sticking out of the bag she had tucked it in as she hurried out. Eglantine’s plan was to quickly return to the cathedral, but her immediate goal was to silence her stomach before her location was broadcasted to the entire London. ‘Although,’ she thought, ‘if I die from hunger, would I revive still hungry?’ And if hunger made you lethargic, then how were you supposed to break out of the cycle? The only logical way out of it was that a certain amount of hunger was negated upon resurrection, to give the player adequate time to find food somewhere. If not enough to go hunt and earn gold to buy supplies, then just enough to locate a soup kitchen nearby or something. It was worth looking into.

For now, Eglantine eagerly took a bite out of the bread and… it felt like the dry rye turned to mush in her mouth. Eglantine raised the bread to eye level. It looked dry. After looking around to be sure that no one was watching her, Eglantine spit out the bread in her mouth into her hand. Whatever it had tasted like in her mouth, the part she bit looked as it should. Strange beyond strange. Unless this was some kind of miracle bread that looked and felt dry but tasted like it was waterlogged and stale at the same time, something odd was going on.

Not one to waste food when she was starving, Eglantine popped the partly chewed piece of bread back into her mouth and swallowed it whole. When she was sure there was nothing left, Eglantine broke off another piece of bread and smelled it before she tasted it. It had smelled like regular cold bread, but again, the same soggy stale taste assaulted her taste buds. It must have been something inherent in this world. Could it be… because they were in the game (or a world just like it), that food was not programmed to taste like anything? What was the default taste based on then? How strange.

Eglantine ate a bit more of the bread and some cheese (which tasted exactly the same as the bread) as she neared the Cathedral. It was as quiet as earlier, which meant that one could always hear the sound of someone’s clothes rustling and making tinny noises as he shifted in his sleep, as well as the low murmur of people talking to themselves, and the broken sobs of the hopeless. Finding her old pew already taken, Eglantine roamed the inner Cathedral, slipping through a door left only half-closed, and up the staircases that probably led to a different part of the building. As expected, Eglantine found herself walking down a corridor by candlelight (she found a candle holder and some unused matches before going too far), and it seemed that she was being led away from the sacristy and towards the residential building.
