As Haneroze arrived in the fighting zone, there were more Adventurers than monsters. She had never experienced this before, but she assumed this happens in any MMORPG during the first few days. However, the situation here was much different that she anticipated.
Monsters were not the only things fought here. Adventurers were fighting each other. With such an overpopulation of players, it's very normal that Kill Stealing happens. But here, things were more personal. People are no longer behind avatars, they are making direct contact with others. And on top of that, more people than usual wanted to quickly gain some levels. There were many reasons, but in the end, it didn't matter. Anyone in the way of their leveling is a nuisance, even if their reason is to stand together on the front lines.
An adventurer had just died at the hands of another. Haneroze was curious to know if there were some sort of Karma system to punish Player Killers, but she did not want to stick around to find out. Even though she had learned Adventurers revive when they die, she still didn't want to experience death. So Haneroze decided to sneak further ahead and find a calmer location.
After walking some time, the condensation of players decreased enough that Kill Stealing was not happening too often. Before attempting to take down her first monster, she wanted to try out spell-casting without manually getting it in the Menu.
"There was someone that said he discovered skills could be used by screaming its name. It seems many people were trying that outside the gates, but I couldn't see very well if it actually worked. Regardless, I can't do that, but maybe I can find a different way to automatically call a spell?"
A hotkey system. Haneroze looked at her left hand, while holding her staff in her right hand. Moving her fingers, she quickly calculated she could set around 30 spells with one hand combination of fingers opened and closed, although many combinations might feel awkward, and some might be too easy to accidentaly use. She can't use her other hand, as it should always be holding a weapon.
"For a start, this should however be good enough. I've already used Prayer of Recovery manually, so it might be easier to start from there. Let's see... These two fingers together, and maybe if I imagine it with all my power..."
She held her major, ring and pinkie fingers down, while her thumb and index finger were held up together. Keeping her fingers like that, she pointed forward. To no avail. She tried again, but this time, thinking the skill name as strong as she could.
"Prayer of Recovery!"
It did not succeed, but she felt like her body was attempting to use the skill. She had a click on why it might have failed.
"I can't use this skill without a target... right? I can probably designate a target by pointing, but I can't point at myself. I could designate myself as a target by pointing toward the skies, maybe? Let's try it."
Keeping the same hand formation, Haneroze held her left arm toward the skies, thinking as strong as possible that she was the target.
"Prayer of Recovery!"
Haneroze was filled with a warm feeling as a bell sound ringed, just like when she healed the Lander in the city.
"Looks like it worked! It's kind of a strange feeling though. I don't think any of this would be possible if it was just a Virtual Reality..."
She decided to go ahead and think of her "hotkey" for her three other skills. Damage Interception was another skill that would be often used, so it needed an easy hotkey too. Leaping Apricot Technique would be useful in an emergency, so it couldn't be something awkward to pull. And then, her Scholar skill Evaluate also needed to be assigned something.
After she was done in her mind, she decided to try her first battle. She walked close to a monster that was unoccupied. A Boar looking monster. Keeping some distance with it, she pointed at the Boar with only her ring and pinkie fingers lifted up.
"Evaluate!"
A window appeared, showing additional information about this monster. Level 1 Young Pittered Boar. That much could be told from normal targetting. The Evaluate interface however also showed weaknesses and skills. However, for this monster, it was pretty much pointless information, as it had no elemental attribute nor skill, just what you would expect from a tutorial monster.
She then raised her arm in the air, raising only her index, major and ring fingers.
"Damage Interception!"
A barrier formed around Haneroze. She was now ready to fight. She took her staff at two hands and ran toward the young boar. She smacked the boar in the back with her staff as she ran past it. She heard the boar scream. She turned to face the boar, which started charging toward her.
"That kind of creature probably only has charge attacks. Should be easy to dodge."
As the boar got close, Haneroze side-stepped and swang her staff, for a successful dodge. However, as she turned again, the boar was already ready to attack and jumped at her. She did not react fast enough and the Boar bounced off her barrier, causing damage to it.
"I need to be more aware of my opponents after my attacks. Or at least take some distance. They are certainly taking damage, but they don't seem to take much recoil from my attacks."
The boar started charging again. This time, Haneroze ran toward the board. She turned slightly to the right before reaching the boar, swinging her staff to the side again while dodging the charge. This time, she turned while still going forward, seeing that the boar was already back at charging at her.
Her interface showed the boar's health, and she saw that it was only one hit away. She readied her staff and swang it at full power at the boar as it arrived in front of her. Her timing was however slightly off, and the boar managed to destroy her barrier before it was killed. Haneroze confirmed the experience, gold and object gains.
"Getting the daily expense shouldn't be too difficult. But I certainly won't be able to afford luxuries with that income."
Haneroze looked for another lonely target. Another boar was wandering around, untouched by any other Adventurer. She used Damage Interception the same way as last time, then charged toward the boar, hitting it with her staff as she passed by. However, as she turned, she was startled by a Slime that was also following her.
"Eh? Why is there a slime after me?"
She wasn't sure if fighting two targets at once was going to be difficult or not.
