Death is only the beginning. tagged / Kablooey! / 527 "Argh!" Vayne yelled out as he was blown across the room, landing halfway and skidding on the floor for the other half. The explosion that rattled through the research room in the basement of the Alchemy Shop was strong enough to cause a rumble throughout the building. Vayne groaned as he sat up, his clothes burnt and his hair singed. The work table where he was tinkering with a new type of transmutation circle that he drew was now covered in soot. The table was stronger than he anticipated as it was still standing, and not really that damaged from the explosion. "Well that was a complete failure." he said as he heard the yells from the Shop Manager, Persephone, from upstairs. "What in the ancient god's name are you doing down there?" She yelled out, apparently he scared off some of the customers. "Sorry Persephone! I was just doing some experiments!" Vayne yelled back in reply as he got to his feet. "Well I would appreciate it if you refrained form blowing up my shop!" she replied. It was a few hours ago when he came across a book inside the shop that held the accepted theory on the molecular composition of Mana Fragments. According to the book, Mana fragments actually hold mana energy at the molecular level, even though these things are created in a uniform size and shape, theoretically, they can be broken down into sizes and still have the capacity to store mana. According to the tome, mana crystals emitted a frequency that, if one was able to find the correct magical wavelength, could make a mana fragment vibrate and shatter into smaller, but usable fragments. This was an interesting theory as in the field, he had trouble maintaining and regenerating mana to prolong his stay in the monster areas. As a mage, he needs increased mana recovery, so according to the theory, the mana powder can be safely diluted in food, drinks even potions so they can recover mana. For Vayne, this is a very important undertaking. Vayne started off by studying the diagram for the proposed magical circuit in tapping into the frequency emitted by the mana fragments. It utilized the same magic circle used in transmutation, but with minor changes in the symbols, reversing the polarity and supposedly would enable a alchemist to break materials down. Vayne modified the empty table on the north side of the room to make the magic circle, and as the old diagram instructed. Vayne finished drawing the circle, Vayne placed two old diodes on the left and right sides of the circle and constructed a closed circuit between the two using two old filaments that ran long the circumference of the magic circle. At the center of the circle, Vayne placed a single mana crystal. "Hmm everything seems right." Vayne said as he looked over the magic circuit. "Now its all the matter of finding the right mana output from me, and keep it constant." With that Vayne placed each hand over the old diodes, releasing his mana. This is where we came in, a few seconds later the circuit exploded, sending Vayne flying. CODED BY DUCKIE OF GS

Death is only the beginning. tagged / notes / 1057 words The room was now filled with thick black smoke as Vayne entered trial #12. Vayne was stumped at how hard the research was developing. He had tried multiple tests on how much mana output it would take to make the correct vibration in the crystal to make it shatter, and not explode. Vayne was now covered in black soot, his cloths slightly burned, and in some parts still smoldering. He said as he took a wet rag to pat down the embers. He then looked down at the mana crystal as he rebuilt the magic circuit. Vayne had taken down notes with his failures, noticing that the mana fragment shook and vibrated as the converted mana ran from Vayne, around the filaments and channeled through the diodes into the fragment. If the mana output from Vayne was too weak, the diodes would explode before the crystal's vibration even started, and if he increased it too quickly, the fragment itself explodes. "Either way, things go boom." he muttered derisively as he leaned over the circuit. He fixed his glasses on his nose, which miraculously have not broken yet. Vayne sighed as he looked at trial #12. It stood there as if it was mocking him. It was laughing at the amount of failures he made. Vayne's head was filled of dismay and smoke. He feels that he was missing something. Something pretty obvious, but keeps on eluding Vayne even if he had been constantly thinking about it. Vayne sighed as he stood up and paced around the room. He was trying to clear his head, as well as spend some time regaining some of this mana. Vayne was getting frustrated, and he doesn't handle frustration very well, as he had been working on this project for almost a day now. As Vayne paced the room for the hundredth time, his stomach started growling. A sudden spasm of weakness ran across his body in a tidal wave. He clutched at his stomach as he tried to fight the pain. "Oh yeah I haven't eaten since yesterday." Vayne said as his body realized that he was hungry. It had already been a good 24 hours since Vayne's last meal, and his body won't last longer if he didn't get a bite to eat. Vayne then went up the spiral staircase back to the main floor of the shop. Vayne excused himself from Ms. Persephone, the manager of the shop and went out the front door. Vayne breathed in deeply the afternoon air as he walked down the cobbled streets of London, looking for a good place to eat. He found a small stall where they were serving hamburgers and fries. Vayne ordered two set meals, as he was really hungry. Vayne took the time to nibble at his food even though he was hungry. He felt that taking his time, with the fresh surroundings, he might have an idea to solve his conundrum. As Vayne nibbled, something caught his eye. It was a bard, he was simply entertaining the diners by playing musical glass. He was making odd and eerie music by using seven identical glasses, with differing levels of water contained inside. As he traced a wet finger on the rims of each of the glasses, the glass would vibrate different musical notes according to the level of water inside. It was simple science, even a small child can do it. As Vayne watched the man play the glasses, things started to click inside Vayne's mind. "No... It can't be that simple, can it?" he asked himself as he chewed down the last bit of his burger. The more Vayne thought about it, the more it made sense to him. As the bard traced his finger on the glass, there was a direct transfer of energy from his fingertips onto the glass. The direct energy transfer, along with the amount of water inside, created perfect balance to make music. Vayne was looking at the project in the wrong way. The reason why he couldn't control the energy output, was that his energy was running around the circuit, before it touches the fragment, the travel makes the energy flux it goes around the circuit. "YEAH!!" Vayne yelled out slamming the table. There were some scattered screams as the diners were surprised at his outburst, but Vayne paid no heed. Vayne forgot about the food remaining on his table and he ran full speed back toward the shop. Vayne burst through the entrance like a man possessed and Ms. Persephone almost threw a giant metal box at him. Vayne apologized as he jumped down the trapdoor, down the spiral staircase and back to his transmutation circle. Vayne recalculated the math for the circuit, replacing the diodes near the center and adjusting the filaments to go through the middle instead of around, and shaping them into a spiral, wrapping the mana fragment. Vayne looked at the new magic circuit and reveled at the simplicity of it all. After readjusting his notes, and adding the new calculations Vayne took a deep breath to admire his work, before he hit himself in the face. "It was so simple you idiot! Not having direct transfer of energy messes with the mana transference!" he exclaimed, scolding himself as if he was his dad. Vayne felt things finally fall into place. It was the final hurdle. All he had to do now was activate the thing. Vayne gulped as he placed his hands on the sides of the diode, his palms facing inward toward the crystal. "Here goes nothing!" he exclaimed as he concentrated his mana into the diodes. The effect was almost instantaneous. The diodes glowed perfectly and in sync, and the filaments directly transferred the energy from Vayne into the crystal, and the excess mana was running down the diodes into the magic circle, using the excess power to run the process. Vayne felt the the whole table vibrate, but not in a bad way. It was a calm and steady vibration. It was not fluxing nor did it fade. It was constant and harmonious. The crystal started to vibrate in sync with the diodes. And as he continued to pour mana into it, the diode started to hum, like the musical glass. "I finally found the right frequency." Vayne said under his breath triumphantly. CODED BY DUCKIE OF GS
