Ah, the woods in the valley outside of town. This would be the perfect sort of place for beginners. Despite her experience with other MMOs allowing her to occasionally get head starts when starting a new game, Aliana was starting to resign herself to being a proper beginner again. With how poorly her past encounters had been going, she was convinced that she was going to have to start smaller. This new virtual reality thing, however it had happened, was throwing her off every which way. One thing she was certain of, though, the interface was worthless in combat. Accessing it wasted time and distracted her so much more than when looking through a computer screen, which left her open to attacks. It was fortunate that she'd learned about ways around that, because otherwise she'd have gotten killed several times out here.
...Actually, now that she thought about it, were there any consequences to dying in virtual reality? Alicia didn't even remember doing anything except playing on her computer, so she wasn't sure what the method was. If it was something in the game program itself, she was probably safe, but if there was a physical interface then the shock of injury and death, even temporary, could cause real-world damage over time which could eventually kill her. Until she was sure of that, she couldn't be careless with her own life. Actually, she couldn't be careless with her life anyway, because most games made players lose items or equipment when they died. So while game logic dictated that death wouldn't be permanent unless something changed, it was still something to be avoided.
While her thoughts ran at a million miles an hour, Aliana made her way deeper into the wood, straying off the path once she was satisfied that she was far enough from Londinium for monsters to appear. She took care to avoid tripping over underbrush, but otherwise her thoughts were running too far and fast for her to pay much attention. It was only when she settled on the idea that she would have to be careful to avoid dying no matter the consequences (or lack thereof) that she took a second to focus on her surroundings again. And found herself surrounded by slimes.
"The irony is probably as thick and viscous as their bodies right now," she remarked, before drawing her sword and holding her shield in front of her. "Alright, then, you want a fight? I've got enough for every one of you!" Aliana called out. None of them seemed to respond to her bold proclamation, so Aliana took the opportunity to strike at one of them, cutting straight through its body to deal moderate damage. It responded to the attack, as did all of the others. Aliana was able to finish the first slime with a couple more hits, but she quickly found herself being attacked on all sides. She was only being hit for chip damage and minor twinges of pain, thanks in part to her armor, but it was going to add up fast. One leaped at her from the left. She raised her shield to defend against it, but that left her open to another chip attack from below. Similarly, an attack on another slime left her open to get hit from behind. "This armor is working wonders," Aliana said, noting how little damage she had taken from it all, "But without more offensive power I'm going to be in trouble before too long." Fortunately, she was in newbie central at the moment, so it wasn't much of a stretch to hope someone else would come along and try to help or even kill-steal. If not, she'd have to get creative.
