A few weeks had passed since the Catastrophe had happened. That was what everyone back in Londinium was calling this incident now. It rapidly became clear that sitting down and doing nothing wasn't going to solve their problems. Another bright side was that this wasn't exactly like some of the fictional examples of this thing she'd heard about where people died when they were killed. Instead, they respawned at the Cathedral, only a little worse for wear. Isolde hadn't experienced it herself, not did she want to, but it was reassuring to know that at least they didn't have to worry about some sort of monster killing them. After this discovery became more well known, a lot of people started to explore the world around them, whether because they were curious about their new surroundings, looking for a way out or thought it would be fun to fight monsters in a real-life video game.
Asides from the lack of good food anywhere, it wasn't the worst thing to happen to her. Not to say it was easy, and it was the most trying thing she herself had endured, but she'd had some time to sort through everything. A lot of time, considering she didn't have school any more, there weren't any chores, or even responsibilities. Entertainment, though... there were no TVs or computers here... or electricity, for that matter. As such, she ended up finding herself looking for things to do. Money for living wasn't hard to come by - it had been tough killing the first few critters in the starting areas, but their... deaths, she supposed, were so unrealistic that she was able to get over it for the most part. It was even a little fun being able to be active like that. She'd even managed to get a few levels out of it, which made things even easier, and open up other places for her to explore. Isolde had even found herself wanting to get hold of a sword of some sort - a naginata would be preferable, but the Shaman didn't have that weapon available to them from the start.
She'd also found herself wanting to know more about the world, and if there was a way out of here. There was no luck on the latter, but every day there was something new and interesting. Isolde had heard about a village that was on an island connected by land not too long ago - the Grain Village on the Isle of Grain - and she'd decided that she wanted to have a look. It was through a swampy area, though, with enemies she wasn't familiar with. Also, the bridge was only there at low tide. Still, she was early, so it gave her some time to get to know the Thames - the river, the land, and the natives. The Marshland... wasn't the nicest of places. There was life here, but it was a sickly sort, full of death and decay at the same time. She'd already seen a few creatures in here, including a small person shaped thing the interface identified as a goblin. She hadn't seen one before, but going by the townsfolk, they were outright hostile, and sometimes actually killed people. She felt like it wouldn't be as hard to fight one of those than it was fighting things like boars. Asides from the smell, the danger, and the humidity, it was actually a rather peaceful and interesting place. However, even though she'd set off early, she knew she shouldn't stop to smell too many of the flowers, or else she'd have to wait for the tide again.
The snap of a twig alerted her to something nearby. Her staff was already ready in a trained, martial pose. As Isolde suspected, it was a goblin. A weak one, around her level, which was fortunate. It looked pretty ugly, and it seemed like it only had some kind of primitive dagger. Unlike the boars in the forest, these weren't nearly so innocent, and might actually attack people if given the chance. Still, she wondered if it was right to attack it when it hadn't done anything to her personally. I know they're just computer programs... but everything's just so real here. Well, mostly. But especially the People of the Land. There's no way they aren't real people... right? So what does that mean for everything else? Of course, it was the People of the Land who had mentioned the danger of goblins... why did this have to be so tricky?
